Yes, he was the main singer for the first year or so until Hayward joined.
Lane had that typical early 60s "twangy" voice that was popular. Hayward was a real singer, if he had never joined Moody Blues, they would have likely faded away without fanfare.
 
This one really hurt. He was a pioneer of the Mellotron, and even turned John Lennon on to it.
Days of Future Past was the very first full album I ever bought. The Moodies were great. John Lodge and Justin, came along after Clint Warwick and Denny Laine left. Things really took off for them after that.
