Stone is merely a "person of interest" in understanding that relationship. Investigators may or may not find that his role in that relationship was criminal. If his role was criminal and he had the requisite mens rea, he will become a defendant. If his role was not criminal, at most, he will be a witness.

I don't know that it's impossible. Trump and his cohorts and supporters have shown that people are capable of believing all sort of things. It does, however, defy reason to think that Stone was a somewhat intelligent individual and that he too had no awareness of whom might have been aiding and abetting (or attempting to do so) the Trump campaign. Given his known interactions with various Russian state actors and/or cutouts, Stone would have had to have been incredibly naive and stupid to have had those interactions and known or suspected they had no material political or state-related relationship to the Kremlin. Thus what we will discover about Stone is that he was (thus remains, given his age) an idiot who has an adolescent level of prescience and perspicacity or a an aider and abettor to criminal activity, if not expressly a perpetrator of it.
