1. We have never invested as much in public education as we should have, because we have always had a private notion of our children.

4. So part of it is that we have to break through our private idea that kids belong to their parents, or that kids belong to their families.

Quietly and almost without notice, an initiative which significantly erodes local and state control of school curriculum has passed in 46 states. The Common Core Standards Initiative sets Math and English curriculum in every participating state at the same level. In adopting this “common core” states are relinquishing their right to compose their own education requirements.

Only Alaska, Nebraska, Virginia, and the great state of Texas have refused adoption of the Common Core Standards. State legislators in Indiana, Georgia, Alabama, and South Dakota have introduced repeal measures, but it is so far unclear how successful these measures will be.

The children from age 5-18 since I can remember have belonged to the state. You feed, clothe them and make sure they're in school or suffer the consequences. Sometimes parents are arrested, and this was happening before Obama was elected so you can't blame it all on Obama. After 18, the boys are still subject to the draft although we haven't drafted lately. It's still a felony not to register though. So basically children belong to the government from age 5 years old on to way past 18.

The only reason bush 2 got to the white house is because of a 5-4 majority of repubs in the supreme court. Dems should have fought that to the end. Republicans sure as hell would have. They would have prolonged the thing for a couple of years guaranteed. If a total recount of all the counties had been done in florida, Gore would have been prez. Not that I liked Gore all that much.
