Russia To Push Syria To Put Chemical Weapons Under International Control

MOSCOW — Syria on Monday quickly welcomed a call from Russia, its close ally, to place Syrian chemical arsenals under international control, then destroy them to avert a U.S. strike, but did not offer a time frame or any other specifics.

The statement by Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem appeared to mark the first official acknowledgement by Damascus that it possesses chemical weapons and reflected what appeared to be an attempt by Syrian President Bashar Assad to avoid the U.S. military attack.

Seems like President Obama made an ass of you, the r-wingers, and the tea baggers.

Triple play!

And the UN gets control of Assads WMD's. How ironic is that? How sweet it is!

If Assad follows through and releases all of Syria's chemical weapons to the international community for destruction, then it is a win win for everyone involved. Thinking anything differently is just idiotic, and of course in your case, partisan.

If you haven't heard the latest, Kerry earlier today demanded in London that Syria had one week to turn over it's chemical weapons or face attack by the U.S. Assad ignored Obama and Kerry and agreed to Putins plan. Now Kerry is having to backtrack on his statements.

But actually it is the rebels who are using the chemical weapons. If Assad turns over his inventory and then the Rebels do another chemical attack, Assad will be blamed.

A way out for Syria?

Syria 'welcomes' proposal to hand over control of chemical weapons

(CNN) -- As Syria said Monday that it supported a proposal to hand over control of its chemical weapons, a key question loomed: Is a diplomatic solution in sight?

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem told reporters in Moscow that his nation "welcomes" a proposal by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during talks on Monday: put Syria's chemical weapons under international control to avert a U.S. military response over an alleged poison gas attack last month.

"I declare that the Syrian Arab Republic welcomes Russia's initiative, on the basis that the Syrian leadership cares about the lives of our citizens and the security in our country," Moallem said. "We are also confident in the wisdom of the Russian government, which is trying to prevent an American aggression against our people."

he failed, miserably.
Yes he did. He and Kerry was out maneuvered by Putin single handedly on foreign relations and strategy. This has made us look terribly weak. If Obama states he will attack anyway tomorrow night in his speech to the nation then we need to have him impeached for ignoring the American people, the congress and the international community. Obama has put himself in position that makes him very desperate to save his image. He can't handle ridicule and being humiliated.

Will Obama offer up his Nobel peace Prize to Assad for doing all that?

Srsly? How stupid are the Obama-boosters here. Does anyone seriously think Assad said "Wow, the US is going to stage a very small very limited strike that wont destroy much of anything. We better give up one of our best trump cards in any war"? Why would Assad give in to any pressure from the US, which looks weak and indecisive? Why does anyone think the Russians care whether Assad has or uses chemical weapons?
The Obama Administration has been thoroughly played here. They are the mark whose been fleeced being told "you better get out of here before the police show up".

Obama may get lucky, but I don't see this really as Russia caving. Assad's two other big backers are Iran and Hezbollah, neither one of which has had much use for weapons that target innocent civilians indiscrimantley ... not that either has much of a track record with mercy towards any individual seen even as a remote threat. As for Russia, they have their own terror worries, and Assad poses no danger, while it's more than a little likely that some of the rebels have a background with the Chechens

The Chechens are pissed because of what Stalin and the USSR did to them.
