Assad is the only allie of Iran. Assad is the main force behind Hezbolla. When the Sunni began street demonstations calling for elections, Assad attacked them with violence. The poplulation revolted with violence and that created the civil war. As Assad's forces grew weaker through attrition on the battlefield, foriegn fighters from Shite counties came to assist his army. Foriegn fighters from Sunni countries came in to help the rebel forces.
Pressure is being placed on the Shite forces to retreat from the battlefield by Sunni countries that have Shite populations. This is leaving Assad with only the Hezbolla and Iranian Gaurd to reinforce his dwindling forces. Hezbolla is already being subjected to attack in Lebenon and if Israel gets involved it will be to attack Hezbolla in Lebenon. And there is the speedy version of why Assad would use gas. He is running out of army. His army recently did a surge on the battlefield, but it will be short lived. The gas is his last resort. Without it, he can not last. With it, he can win.
