If we want to talk about really difficult and important, we can talk about the thousands of scientists, mathematicians, doctors, and computer scientists in NASA, NSA, DARPA, DoD, DoE, and nearly every other government agency.

Seriously? Of all the jobs that you listed there only one is considered an exclusive function of the government, and that is only because they made it illegal for anyone else to do it. In fact, California use people who are actually in prison to fight fires, so the argument that firefighters have to be government workers is so stupid it doesn't even merit as an argument, yet it is still better than the arguments that teachers and social workers are proof that we need government employees.

Come to think of it, anybody who has enough money\, and actually cares about their security, doesn't rely on the police, they pay private security people for protection, and have them investigate crimes.

Nice attempt though, not that you will see how stupid it actually is.

Strange things happen to people who start violating their principles for money. Everything becomes negotiable. They don't just abandon whatever principles they abandoned to take that job, they abandon all of them.

Many of you have strange ideas about principles and employment. There is rarely any conflict between honest employment and principles, unless the employer is engaged in some activity that is destructive to the nation or the environment.

The Defense Department is a core function of the federal government. A function supported by conservatives. The same applies to the Justice Department, the Interior Department, the State Department, the CIA, the VA, and a few other agencies. Why would any consevative, who supports a limited federal government, have any conflict in principles while working for those entities?

BTW, once again a liberal/socialist who cannot comprehend the differences between the various levels of government.

They respond to all major fires major disasters that call on the mutual aid resources of CalFire. That does not usually send them into a city, but there is no reason they wouldn't go in if the disaster is bad enough.

If you had a private sector job, but, the local, county, state or federal government offered you a full time job with GREAT pay (lets say 2-3X more than you make), with great benefits far better than what you get now, would you accept it? Or, would you stick to your small government principles and say that the job pays too good for a government worker, and you will not participate in furthering the problem?

Never happen. I don't believe there are any government jobs that pay 2 to 3 times what they pay in the private sector. What does the president get now? $600,000? What is the average CEO pay? Millions? Now retirement and medical care for congress and our president are out of this world. They should be force to pay for their own private medical care and retirement and use medicare and social security like the rest of us.

I'm all for getting one of those jobs. Often thought about standing on the street corner with a sign "Elect me Senator and I will go to Washington and work for you for 6 years, then retire on their outrageous retirement plan and help one of you get that job for the next 6 years." I doubt I could do a worse job and why not spread the wealth to the people?
