San Fran Schools Giving Free CONDOMS to 11 year old kids. No parent opt-out

Parents are not allowed to opt their kids out of this program. If the kid asks for a condom, he or she gets it.

feb 26 2016 SAN FRANCISCO – All San Francisco middle school students now have easy access to condoms, whether or not their parents want them to have them.
The San Francisco Unified School District became the third in California – after Oakland and Los Angeles – to give away condoms to middle schoolers when board members unanimously approved the decision at a meeting Tuesday night, NBC Bay Area reports.

SFUSD safety and wellness director Kevon Gogin said the decision is based on a survey of sixth through eighth grade students that showed about 5 percent are sexually active and 3 percent use condoms. The move also eliminates an existing provision to school policy that allowed parents to opt their children out of the condom availability program, according to ABC 10.

Students as young as 11 years old can now simply ask a school employee for condoms and receive a rubber without issue.

So, a kid has to know what a condom is in order to be able to ask for one. There's a first thing. How many 11 year olds know what a condom is? If they do know, then chances are they're hanging around with other kids (or adults) who are telling them stuff about sex.

Now, where I grew up a 13 year old ran away with her boyfriend and then it turned out she was pregnant. Had free condoms been available I'm sure they wouldn't have used them, but there's a chance, and it would have been a chance for a positive change.

The reality is that young kids are exposed to sex at an early age, not by schools, but by society. There's also the fact that some kids just feel it, they know about it, they become sexual at the age of 11, 12, 13, some do, some don't.
Allowing them to protect themselves from HIV and other diseases is a positive thing.

But I guess conservatives think differently. They think if you can get a condom, you'll have sex. Not, if you want sex you'll have sex regardless of whether you can get a condom or not.

Middle school kids have sex sometimes. Would you rather an 8th grader have a condom or an abortion?

Or pre-teen pregnancies. All girls wait until marriage to have sex, and even then only for the purposes of procreation. No kids experiment and do the things they see on the internet, no kids are ever sexually abused and then have sex early in life, no lonely kids are ever manipulated into having sex by an older kid showering them with attention, no kids ever fall into drugs and prostitution.

Sex? Doesn't exist for kids, so why even bother to give them the tools and knowledge to be safe?

Of course it was unanimous, no board member would want to guarantee his being voted out next election if he dared go against the sexual ideology in that city.

6th graders get condoms for the asking? I just cannot imagine kids that young engaged in sexual relations. And yet so many of our public officials and educators seem to think the way we deal with this is to support it in some ways. Because the thought of making a serious and concerted effort to educate these kids about how very dangerous and wrong that is instead, and even more than that --- well that would be harmful for their psyches and some kind of immoral measure unto itself apparently? I wonder what those teachers say to those kids if they ask if its ok to go to the Folsom Street Fair?
Condoms come in sub-puberty sizes?

That's not good enough. I'd rather the kids not have sex, but if they are I want them to be safe. Like it or not, middle school kids that are going to have sex need somewhere they can get condoms. They aren't going to ask their parents for them, and for some of those kids the parents may be all but non-existent.

We simply can't pretend that kids don't have sex, won't have sex, and if they do have sex they'll somehow magically be protected against disease and pregnancy. I'd much rather they were able to get rubbers from the school nurse than have my kids come home with a baby or VD, wouldn't you?

There are many factors at work here. In the time-place I grew up, we figured things out on our own. There were few graphic depictions of sexual nature unless you were looking at hard core porn. It is such a shame that children so young not only know about condoms, but require them. This is a total societal fuck-up.

Oh, and your observation vis-a-vis Alaska clearly illustrates your ignorance regarding the issue.

Kids are smarter earlier, they're more aware of their life. They have free time, they socialize.

In China this would happen less, why? Because they're studying all hours there are.

However parenting skills are also up for discussion, and this again involves education. Parents aren't able to bring their kids up to have the skills to lead a decent life in the modern world. They need help. Kids need to be educated into how to do this at school and kids at school also need to be taught some life skills too.

I reveal that my daughter did manage to come home with a baby. No lack of effort from either myself or the public school system prevented this. Liberal application of alcohol on the part of the sperm donor and stupidity on my daughter's part ended with my first granddaughter. Given the circumstances, no rubber would have changed the outcome. I later learned from others that this kid was abusive and manipulative. C'est la vie.
