Saudi Arabia says it intercepts missile attack over capital

Saudi Arabia said Saturday it intercepted a missile attack over its capital and bomb-laden drones targeting a southern province, the latest in a series of airborne assaults it has blamed on Yemen’s rebel Houthis.

The Saudi-led military coalition fighting in Yemen’s yearslong war announced the Iran-allied Houthis had launched a ballistic missile toward Riyadh and three booby-trapped drones toward the province of Jizan, with a fourth toward another southwestern city and other drones being monitored. No casualties or damage were initially reported. There was no immediate comment from the Houthis.

Here we go and now that everyone knows what Biden's about it is going to hell in a handbasket.

"The Houthis overran Yemen’s capital and much of the country’s north in 2014, forcing the government into exile and months later prompting Saudi Arabia and its allies to launch a bombing campaign."

––

The Houthis are Iranian pawns, and thus part of Xiden's sphere of influence. Iran and the libs are pretty much jointed at the hip. Sleepy Joe should really apologize to keep Saudi Arabia's good will here.

You don't know what you are talking about.
No, he does. It's a proxy cold war thingy.

Its NOT a cold war. Saudi Arabia has propped Yemen up for decades.. They don't want a failed state on the borders... unlike some other countries.

Because you say so?

The claim that Iran and the libs are joined at the hip is pure idiocy. Nobody wants a war with Iran. It would make Iraq look like a picnic.

Iran talks big but they're weak and dependent on Russia and China. In a war with Iran, we would most likely be fighting Russians there. Iran would probably end up as nothing more than a pile of burned out rubble, much like what happened to Syria.

Trump would have avoided that. It's the Biden administration you should worry about.

Trump was intercepting Iranian oil tankers and stealing their oil for months. Iran's oil is refined in VZ because Iran has very little refinery capacity.

No. The Russian might to war over Armenian because that is their region of influence. Iran, no way.

I wonder about that.. I always thought there was a lot of Russian influence when I was in Northern Iran.

No. The Russian might to war over Armenian because that is their region of influence. Iran, no way.

Russia has had a prsence in Iran for decades, more so over the last few years. Iran wouldn't have been able to build their nuclear facilities if it hadn't been for help from the Russians.

Now they're playing war games together

"The IRGC – which is now basically in control of foreign policy in Iran, with the full backing of the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei – believes that the U.S. has limited options available to it to counter these moves by Iran, with major military options severely constrained by Iran’s closer relationships with China and Russia. Aside from the specific military elements connected to the 25-year deal with China, it should not be forgotten that Russia too plays a part when necessary in a three-sided relationship. Russia sent a reminder of this last week with joint naval drills in the northern part of the Indian Ocean. Whilst notionally characterised as being aimed at ‘contributing to maritime security and combating piracy and terrorism’, the message to the U.S. was very clear indeed, with the exercises comprising naval and air units of the Iran Army Navy and IRGC Navy, and a number of Russian navy vessels and air support. Later this year, OilPrice.com understands, there will be a much bigger set of manoeuvres held off Iran, featuring both Russia and China, in an echo of the joint naval (and air support) drills held in December 2019 between the three countries. As Iranian Navy Rear Admiral, Hossein Khanzadi, stated in November 2019 just ahead of these drills: “A joint war game between several countries, whether on land, at sea, or in the air, indicates a remarkable expansion of cooperation…and the manoeuvres carry the same message to the world, that these three countries have reached a meaningful strategic point in their relations.”

Houthis united the country in the face of Saudi intervention, except Southern separatists.

They will win, as they have always been doing in entire Yemeni history, it's just a matter of time.

The Houthis are Iranian and Russian proxies. It's no secret that Russia is supplying them with weapons. And yes, they probably will win because unlike Present Trump, we now have a president who would have no problem surrendering to any foreign hostile nation.

don't forget Marsians, Russians are not enough to make the picture complete :)

Having been to Yemen in the service of my country, my opinion is that the issues behind the conflict are many, varied and complex. You could probably write a multi-volume report on the pertinent subjects and personalities, and still not find a solution. And some solutions are just beyond diplomatic acceptance, just as some are militarily unacceptable.

While I have little regard for the competence of the US leadership inside the beltway, it does little good to criticize them without knowing what intelligence has on the subject from day-to-day
(the perception they hold).

Whatever you might think of the Russians, Moscow (alla President Vladimir Putin) wants the US to exhaust all its capital (finance, hardware, and resources, political and diplomatic) in order to neutralize America as a world power. It wishes to see America in turmoil from both a domestic view and as outside international observers see America.

I would think twice before accepting advice from Moscow (and the Kremlin’s Senate building).

Of course Putin wants that, it was one of the goals of Communism from the start.

But the Chinese are doing a more efficient job of expending our resources and wearing us down.

What resources? China has made soft power investments in Afghanistan and Africa... all over the place.. How does that expend US resources?

They built Port Gwadar while were were screwing around in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I know we all (sometimes) exaggerate to make a point; but, let's remember where Yemen came from.

◈ The merger of North Yemen (Yemen Arab Republic) and South Yemen (People's Democratic Republic of Yemen) only happened in 1990.
◈ North Yemen was derivative from the Great War (WWI) and became independent 1 November 1918, the day after the Ottoman Empire signed the Armistice of Mudros on 30 October 1918 aboard the HMS Agamemnon. North Yemen reinvented itself in September 1962 as a result of an Egyptian-inspired overthrow of the government. North Yemen became the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR)
◈ South Yemen became independent in 1967 when the UK ended the Protectorate status.
◈ In May 1990 North Yemen and South Yemen merged and became the Republic of Yemen.

No one is really sure when Yemen became a failed state, but the entire history of the country (North and South) is one of conflict. The US Intelligence Community (IC) likes to refer to it as a country in transition. When we say "THEY will win," who is "they" • and • "what" will they win?

Since the full-fledged Yemeni Civil War, it's hard to keep track of all the influences that are engaged. For the past couple of months, the Houthi Forces have become increasingly bold in attacks targeting Saudi Arabian border interests.

I'm on my way out the door but I would like to talk with you. Saudi intervention doesn't really address what has gone on in Yemen since 1950.

Probably one an hour.
Boots on the ground is a big no.no, so you'll have to bomb from the air (which is fine but has no exit strategy)

In 1979 (now 40 years ago), I involved in a Command Post Exercise involving Iran. It made it very clear that the weather and terrain present some unique challenges that would indicate a very costly engagement in any military expedition. Now a quarantine type objective is very different from an Air, Sea, Ground conflict.

Look at Afghanistan
(give a hard - honest -look)... (I've been there.) We have been engaged there since 7 October 2001 (we are coming up on twenty years soon).

America does not have the domestic support or the political will
(not to mention the military resources) to do what needs to be done in Afghanistan. Do you honestly think that American will generate the material, blood, and treasure to confront Iran? Now IF Iran wants to meet America in the air, or wants to come out and play in the Persian Gulf or the Gulf of Oman, THEN, that is a much different story. Still dangerous and potentially disastrous, but an entirely different challenge.

I had the opportunity to sit and listen to some of the staff of GEN George W. Casey Jr, staff of GEN David Petraeus, and the staff of GEN Raymond Odierno. At the end of the day, they all sounded very similar. Each successive staff would say that the new boss knew what to do and will get us on track. Let me say that every single staff member I listened to was extraordinary intelligent (second to none). But at a certain point, truth becomes a casualty in war. They have a tendency to rationalize and alter perceptions to justify their "truth." But were they "effective."

Do an honest assessment yourself.
The National Strategy for Victory in Iraq (2005) opened with this.
As the central front in the global war on terror, success in Iraq is an essential element in the long war against the ideology that breeds international terrorism. Unlike past wars, however, victory in Iraq will not come in the form of an enemy's surrender, or be signaled by a single particular event -- there will be no Battleship Missouri, no Appomattox. The ultimate victory will be achieved in stages, and we expect:
  • In the short term:
    • An Iraq that is making steady progress in fighting terrorists and neutralizing the insurgency, meeting political milestones; building democratic institutions; standing up robust security forces to gather intelligence, destroy terrorist networks, and maintain security; and tackling key economic reforms to lay the foundation for a sound economy.
  • In the medium term:
    • An Iraq that is in the lead defeating terrorists and insurgents and providing its own security, with a constitutional, elected government in place, providing an inspiring example to reformers in the region, and well on its way to achieving its economic potential.
  • In the longer term:
    • An Iraq that has defeated the terrorists and neutralized the insurgency.
    • An Iraq that is peaceful, united, stable, democratic, and secure, where Iraqis have the institutions and resources they need to govern themselves justly and provide security for their country.
    • An Iraq that is a partner in the global war on terror and the fight against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, integrated into the international community, an engine for regional economic growth, and proving the fruits of democratic governance to the region.
Ask yourself: Where are we on this scale? We have to be very careful that the White House and DOD Leadership do not exaggerate their capabilities. The is especially true when addressing NEW military expeditions like Iran.
