Former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced the aid on a visit to Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, saying the money would be separate from the $3bn promised in December to help Lebanon's armed forces buy weapons from France.
Mr Hariri, a Sunni leader in Lebanon, was quoted as saying Saudi King Abdullah's new aid pledge is aimed at preserving the "security and stability of Lebanon".
