In not so much of a surprise, the Senate rejected a proposal by the Obama Administration to raise the Federal Minimum Wage to $10.10 an hour. This deals a serious blow to the Obama Administration, and signals that Democrats "Economic Fairness" agenda is doomed to fail. This also raises election year concerns for Democrats as Republicans are expected to make gains in the Senate.

Senate Republicans have blocked an election-year Democratic bill that would have raised the federal minimum wage.

Wednesday’s vote was a defeat for one of President Barack Obama’s top economic priorities. And it is sure to echo in this year’s congressional elections as both parties grapple over which is truly trying to help American families.

The bill would have gradually increased the current $7.25 hourly minimum wage to $10.10 an hour over 30 months. Democrats say it would have helped millions of low-income families, while Republicans argue that it would have raised employers’ costs and reduced jobs.

The vote was 54-42 in favor of allowing debate on the measure, six short of the 60 needed to prevail.

Underscoring the political value they believe the bill has, Democrats have said they will force additional votes on the legislation this year.

The next thing you know those imbeciles will be clamoring for amnesty so that a few million illegals can compete for entry level jobs, create demand, and drive up wages ...

Too f---ing funny ...

Isn't there a democratic majority in the Senate?

Seems to me it was some democrats that blocked the bill.

Did you even read the article? Or maybe you are unaware of procedures in the US Senate.

Title is misleading...shocking...

Furthermore this plays to the dems just fine....now the right looks like they don't like hard working americans.

Nobody bases their vote on whether or not their Representative or Senator favors raising the minimum wage. On the list of issues people care about the most, this is near the very bottom of the pile. It won't make any difference in any race.

In another thread, we asked:

http://www.usmessageboard.com/politics/352099-let-s-name-the-things-republicans-really-need.html

Included in that was "higher wages" and some Republicans barely agreed. But they call higher wages part of the "democratic agenda".

Look at is this way. Business in Red States are trying to lure skilled workers from Blue States. That means the jobs left over are for Republicans who can only get minimum wage. And they are fighting against a higher wage and benefits like health care? Seems like it. Guess poverty to them, proves they "work hard" and "don't need no stinkin' gubmint".

yea, another one who can't smell democratic grandstanding attemping to buy votes. the democrats don't want this to pass. why didn't they propose it when they had the 60 votes required? they brought up all of their real agenda items then. Reid knows the republicans are going to vote against it, they've all made their positions very clear. but he still keeps calling for a vote. to what end? ah so he can tie thr republicans and the dreaded Koch brothers to holding back pay from american citizens. But notice democrats only ever bring these types of votes up when they don't have the votes to win. So are you starting to get the hang of how the senate works?

You can only do so much in two weeks. Republicans had six years. That's a lot of damage.

They figured out how damaging it would be to military bases to have all the cheap fast food places close down overnight and military spouses suddenly unemployed.
