Senate's 46 Dems Got 20 Million More Votes Than Its 54 Republicans

On Tuesday, 33 US senators elected in November will be sworn in by Vice President Joe Biden — including 12 who are new to the chamber. The class includes 22 Republicans and 11 Democrats, a big reason why the GOP has a 54-46 majority in the Senate overall.

But here's a crazy fact: those 46 Democrats got more votes than the 54 Republicans across the 2010, 2012, and 2014 elections. According to Nathan Nicholson, a researcher at the voting reform advocacy group FairVote, "the 46 Democratic caucus members in the 114th Congress received a total of 67.8 million votes in winning their seats, while the 54 Republican caucus members received 47.1 million votes."

Here's what that looks like in chart form:

Just another reason why 2016 should be great for Democrats!
And a math lesson, too.

It does when you consider your statement, "The assumption that a state with a small population should have its People be given disproportionate power in the federal government makes no sense".

It absolutely makes sense when you remember that it was purposely designed precisely that way. The House was designed to be the "people's house", and went by population. The Senate was designed to give each state exactly the same representational power. Together, they craft legislation, and the popular will of the people was never supposed to be the absolute authority. But you knew that, right?

It was only designed that way because it was the only way to get the states together. That doesn't make it right.

No it wasn't.
It was designed to give equal representation to the smaller States so that the larger States could not have complete power over the smaller ones.
It's called checks and balances.
Obviously states had to be encouraged to join the Union. No territory was going to become a state to be dominated by the larger east coast states (at the time) without concessions. Imagine dozens of states 100 years ago being fully dominated by NY. NYcabdriver's is a uniformed ditz.

You realize that the Constitution was written when we had only 13 colonies before there was territories?
Jeez
You realize that there were "sea-to-sea" grants by the British crown and rhe writers of the constitution were not fools?

Yes. It's bad. Any system that is contrived to thwart the will of the people is bad.

Do you need a civics lesson too? Whomever wins the majority of votes, wins the Senate seat. You can't get more democratic than that.

The states are not democratically configured. Two senators from Alaska with as much power as two senators from NY, or CA, or TX. It's silly.

That's because we are a Constitutional Republic not a democracy.
Senators represent their States, the House represents their people from each State.

We are a democracy because the power to change the Constitution still rests in the hands of the People, which is what a democracy is.

The assumption that a state with a small population should have its People be given disproportionate power in the federal government makes no sense,

but the nature of the colonies in the 18th century made the task of uniting them one that required some ultimately nonsensical contrivances.

With due respect, our nation is a Republic NOT a Democracy.

"The Constitution of the United States is a carefully balanced document. It is designed to provide for a national government sufficiently strong and flexible to meet the needs of the republic, yet sufficiently limited and just to protect the guaranteed rights of citizens; it permits a balance between society's need for order and the individual's right to freedom. To assure these ends, the Framers of the Constitution created three independent and coequal branches of government. That this Constitution has provided continuous democratic government through the periodic stresses of more than two centuries illustrates the genius of the American system of government."

It was a republic. Now not so much. The limitations placed into the Constitution to keep it a thriving republic have been removed. See the so called due process clause of the 14th amendment that allows the states to take your life, liberty, and property and also through proxy allows the federal government to do the same. See the amendment that made senators a "popular" vote vs the original system of checks and balances that had the Senate beholding to state legislatures. See the amendment that let the federal government tax all of your labor (income) for any reason whatsoever.

This is not the making of a republic any more. One by one every state is being made to bow to federal control of every moment of every citizens life, from cradle to grave.

There is no merit to having a government where a minority of representatives can thwart the will of the majority.

That is simply a formula for dysfunction.

The American system of government is fcked up.

The problem is that our Constitutional Republic does not have the iron clad guarantees to protect our rights.

All we need is the greedy majority (usually only a plurality) to vote in shitheads like Obama to rob us and take away our freedom and we don't have the courage to do anything about it.
In our form of government as in all government, Iron clad guarantees to protect rights can not and will never exist. Our constitution is about as close as you can get.

You might want to read Article 5 again, only State legislatures can propose or approve changes to the Constitution.

And they are not popularly elected legislatures?

And of course they, like the federal congress, never ever do anything the people disagree with, right? Do you really think the people were all for the 16th Amendment, I don't, but it was ratified by the states anyway.

The Constitution speaks of the role of government serving as a republic, which is why we have two senators associated with each state to pass laws based on equal representation and not simply a majority where more populated states get the upper hand. The House representation is for the needs of the will of the people, which makes the House and Senate a true checks and balance when it was established. The Legislative branch and the executive are designed with the purpose of creating a checks and balance with a dependency of one to the other in establishing laws. No single branch should have the ultimate power if they follow those powers delegated specifically to them under the Constitution. It's that representation "checks and balance" of the legislative, as well as within all three branches of government, set under a Constitutional framework which makes us a Republic and not a Democracy.
