IMPERIAL BEACH – The City Council has approved the environmental impact report for a long-awaited project to replenish the city's eroding coastline.

The Silver Strand Shoreline Renourishment project will add sand to the beach every 10 years for 50 years. Sand dredged from the bottom of the ocean will replenish 7,100 feet of the shoreline and add 105 feet in width to the beach.

The federally and locally funded project is expected to cost more than $75 million from evaluation to periodic replenishmentfor 50 years.

The city could spend $2.1 million a year to fix potential damage if no project is implemented, Community Development Director Greg Wade said. He said it would be difficult to continue hosting a national sand-castle competition without enough sand.
