The 20,000-member National Sheriffs Association (NSA) says California’s new Sanctuary State law is dangerous, reckless and an obstruction of their efforts to protect the public.
The law, signed by Gov. Jerry Brown last week, prohibits police from participating in federal immigration enforcement efforts or inquiring about a person’s immigration status, handcuffs police and endangers the public, NSA Executive Director Jonathan F. Thompson said in a statement slamming the law:
“Americas Sheriffs are saddened and disappointed that Governor Brown signed this reckless bill into law.”
This law has turned police into political “pawns,” but they remain determined to protect the public, Thompson said. He also called on lawmakers to pass legislation that would free law enforcers from being hindered by this type of careless, political gamesmanship:
“It is unfortunate that California’s law enforcement has become pawns in this political game, but they will continue to do their jobs diligently to protect their communities.”
“We also implore leaders in Washington to take action and pass sensible legislation that would prevent careless legislation from hamstringing law enforcement and would give them the tools to combat dangerous policies like this.”
