“On September 7, the US P-8 Poseidon surveillance airplanes tried to approach the Russian border twice… with their transponders off,” Russian Defense Ministry’s spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov said in a statement.

The SU-27 fighter jets that intercepted the US aircraft were acting “in strict accordance with international flight rules,” the statement reads.

Two unnamed US defense officials earlier accused Russian jets of carrying out an “unsafe and unprofessional” intercept of the US spy aircraft, which was on a “regular patrol” over the Black Sea. The officials were speaking of the incident with Reuters.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that after the Russian jets approached the US spy planes close enough to visually identify them, the American aircraft sharply changed direction and flew away from the border.

There is no doubt Putin is a stronger leader both domestically and internationally. To argue otherwise is to state that all things American are inherently better than all things foreign.

No silly, it would be to argue that Putin's governing with hamfisted suppression of any real political opposition and free press is not an example of "strong" leadership.

If Putin was a "strong leader' he'd have the balls to establish true, even field for political competition for high office. If he was a strong leader he would set real term limits and step aside when his time is up instead of putting in a puppet to keep his seat warm. If he was strong he would not be forwarding billions of dollars into his and his close circle's personal accounts.
