The country is out of basic necessities. Every adverse event was followed by more and stricter government controls. These in turn led to more problems. Price controls led to people diverting toilet paper across the border.

Fascism uses populism but it is a kind of narrow populism that pits people who see themselves as the traditional establishment against the working class or minority ethnic groups they may see as a threat to tradition or economic stability. Do you see liberals using labor or immigrants as a scapegoat? No you do not. If liberals have any kind of a scapegoat it is the people who have all the economic and most of the political power in this country not relatively defenseless and faceless "threats to our way of life". Fascism has been hard to pin down on a Left-right axis because it uses elements of both but when all is said and done established wealth has ultimately been in charge and democracy has been the first casualty.
