An indeterminant number of young people join the military because of the employment situation, especially for the unskilled and under-educated. That is a very unfortunate reason to put one's body into a uniform and become a resource to be used in potentially dreadful ways.
As for for Congress, a lamentably few "join" (go through what is called the election process) for correct reasons; public service, representing their community, working to improve the Republic. Apparently, the greater number are there for personal aggrandizement.
