I've got an interesting story about this. I'm still not sure I believe it, because my friend is such a bullshitter.

Anyhow Chuck was a counselor at a Boy Scout Camp that was adjacent to the Woodstock farm. Promoters would ferry entertainers to the camp so they could eat at the dining hall and freshen up at the facilities, far from the maddening crowds.

Each evening Chuck and another counselor would perform the Star Spangled Banner as the camp Flag was retired. Chuck on guitar and his buddy with a bugle. So, according to him - Hendrix strolled by, stopped, and watched them perform the entire song. After dinner he went back to Woodstock and went on stage.
