Strike for $15.00 an hour, Sub shop fires everybody

News flash in a bad economy it would be advised not too go on strike.

I'm sure the company had an HR policy pertaining to missing excessive work days. Most places do. I'm also sure they got the company 'handbook' which spelled out the policy. KUDOS to the employer for even handedly enforcing his policies.

Federal law would have protected these employees had the stated reason for firing them been "missed work to strike". Doesn't matter what the HR policy is, it doesn't trump the law, never.

That said, this owner is obviously a jerk. Choosing to A) close right before Christmas and B) to notify his employees via email.

I wouldn't have notified them...padlock the place with a "CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS" sign on the door.

Nope. And no need to.

Companies that pull shit like this won't be in business long.

Usually, when a company has to "remodel", they think a new coat of paint is going to cover up their inadequacies as a business.

But they usually find out that they can't motivate the new employees to do a good job any better than they could motivate the old ones.

Who won?

Sub shop loses business while they scramble for new employees, employees go get another low paying job
I think you need to read the article. An excellent time to fire them since the employees put themselves in that position and they were to close anyway for remodeling.

Companies that are closing for remodelling are usually failing to start with.

Now they've got the reputation of being anti-worker in a union town. That ain't gonna fly.

Unions aren't exactly on the upside now. I hope the new restaurant is automated and doesn't hire anyone.

You mean like the Wendy's, McDonalds, and Dunkin Donuts that have closed to remodel? Dude, the shit you spew here is too STUPID to be legit!

I really have to wonder what kind of retardation it is on the right to hate people who make less than you do, who are often doing the menial jobs you'd consider beneath you.

It really makes not a lick of sense.
I don't hate you, but you really are a special kind of stupid there Joe.

Again, guy, you live in a second world country...

You got nothing to brag about.

See, that's what I mean. Truly a special kind of stupid.

It's would be difficult to remodel a food service company while open. As far as his reputation goes, it won't mean squat. If he has good food for good prices people will vote with their wallets.

I'm afraid these kids got caught up in socialist bs and overvalued their worth. What about their reputation and trying to find work when you tried to put your employer out of business?

The problem with liberals is that they believe in a top down economy. Prices can be set (government does it best) and it all falls into place. Reality doesn't work that way. Yes, it's tough now, and it sucks. But if we went back to a more fiscally conservative economy (pro business, small government) it would get better and employers would have to beg good employees to stay, like not long ago.

I did those jobs. I did them quite happily glad I had a job. The striking workers tried to cut the throat of the cow giving them their milk. Now they have neither milk nor cow. Actions have consequences. The left is so fond of saying that actions have consequences. Actions had consequences when the unions caused the restaurant to close for four days. Those were good actions. Now the restaurant is doing something about it. I hope they do more and invest in automation denying employment to all of the former employees who might not be so quick to strike next time.

Actions have consequences. The strikers didn't know that the restaurant had contingency plans to close and retool into something else. If they knew, they might not have closed their place of employment for four days. We really don't know whether the plan to close and change was in the works or whether it happened during those four days.

Just think how happy that union and those strikers were when they forced this place to close for four days. They were jubilant. They had finally stuck it to the man and caused losses to the rich owner. They need to draw on that sense of joy they had when they closed the business. It was what they wanted. Maybe it will comfort them now.

So now, in addition to running their business, they have to do all the grunt work that their workers were doing.

Good move.

I wonder if the workers will be discussing their "victory" around the Christmas table today? :dunno:

Actually, the country had its greatest prosperity when we had a mostly unionized workforce, the rich paid high tax rates and the minimum wage had teeth.

Even Republicans saw it that way, hense, "Eisenhower Republican".

When that shop reopens the owner will have to "scramble" for all of 10 minutes to hire a new staff.

And he'll be just as bad as managing them as he was the last bunch.

You do realize you have to be a grade A douchebag to get people working for minimum wage to strike against you, right? Especially since they have no promise of keeping their jobs if they do.

I can't see this guy being a better manager because he gets other employees.

Likely the applications are piling up right now. IF they plan on hiring staff at all.

In the 50s much of the restaurants were automated. Horn & Hardart was the biggest chain restaurant in the nation. It was called the automat. There were very few employees, I think the one we went to had two who cleaned off the tables when the diners didn't clean away their own trays.

As prices rose, automated food service became impractical because the machines didn't take paper money. When prices rose to require paper money, they had to have a cashier. The minimum wage was low enough to make employees the more practical alternative for fast food. It's not like we need new technology. It's always been there. Now vending machines not only take paper, but debit cards are used more than money. Make it expensive enough to pay employees and they will price themselves out of the market.

The Automat didn't survive because it was crappy service. You had no idea how long that food had been in their.

I should also point out that eliminating the casheir probably doesn't eliminate more than one employee.
