On taking a knee in the Super Bowl:

American professional football is a game like no other. It has evolved over time into a technical and technological wonder both visual and cerebral. It is a game that exploits the full range of human abilities-brawn, brain, speed, grace and tactical planning. The object is simply to move an artifact about the size of a loaf of bread into the territory of the opposition and ultimately deliver it to a special, protected place-the end zone. There are rules of engagement and handling of the artifact of course and this can cause dispute but nothing is perfect. It’s a wonderful game and it is loved in America. We may lose it.

Football is a game that brings people together to cheer on a team that has a plan to win. However, there is nothing more divisive in the human condition than politics where the only rule is there are no rules. Football generates huge crowds as it brings people together to yell, scream and revert to primitive urges-in fun. Politics generates huge crowds to drive people apart while they yell, scream and revert to primitive urges-for real.

Politics can feed itself by taking something positive and turning into something negative. In 1969 at the famous Woodstock Concert, Abbey Hoffman, no doubt with a prototype of Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals in his pocket, jumped on the stage and grabbed a microphone in an attempt to politicize the event. He was summarily plowed off the stage with the guitar of the Who’s Pete Townshend.

Townshend wasn’t worried about advertisers losing money if he clobbered Hoffman over the head with his guitar-which according to some who were there he threatened to do if Hoffman came back on stage. Today things are different-there are huge sums of money at stake in the ultimate arena of pro football, the Super Bowl.

The tactics of Saul Alinsky are invading the territory of Abraham Lincoln and if those tactics prevail they could score a win for the sinister ideology of dirty tricks over the sacrifices that Anglo Americans made fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with black men in the Civil War.

There is nothing noble in Alinksy’s tactical ideology. Taking a Knee in front of millions is just a way of using a ready-made crowd to thumb your nose at the opposition and ignore your own failures.

Let’s hope it doesn’t happen.
