Tesla's Elon Musk was on CNBC this morning. He said they are rapidly expanding their Free Supercharger Network. They can now charge enough in 20 minutes to drive for 3 hours & this recharge speed will keep improving. Their recharging stations are solar powered with battery backup & will keep on recharging cars even when the power grid fails. The new Tesla Model-T & a SUV are coming out in less than 4 years for $35k. It will save $40K in gasoline. It's like getting the car for free. Elon said their cars are selling 3 times faster in the USA than they imagined. They are profitable without government subsidies. They did not need the subsidies but it sure did speed things up. Tesla stock is up 400% in the last 6 months.

All of the CNBC announcers who drove the Tesla said it was way more powerful & responsive than any gasoline powered car they had ever driven. Over 25% of all Tesla test drives end up as a sale. Tesla demand in the US is exceeding production capacity. They had planned to export most of the cars but will have to expand to produce enough to export. All other luxury car manufacturers have had to cut production, but Tesla sales are increasing & outstripping their ability to expand or produce cars. Elon said Tesla will make a self-driving auto-pilot car in the near future.

At the OPEC meeting today their members were concerned with the USA waining oil imports. They all agreed to keep their current production quotas. Domestic drilling, electric cars, domestic natural gas, ethanol & bio-fuel are having a major impact on OPEC.

How well do those solar chargers work at night or on cloudy days? Would you sign up for the first night flight on a solar airplane?

all this electric car stuff is great and someday it may become practical. But for the foreseeable future the world's economies will run on fossil fuels, to think otherwise is just ignorant.

You are stupid! The night time charging was explained to you many times & most recently in this post. Your ignorance is constantly reconfirmed every time you post.

I understand, at night you recharge from the grid, and the grid is powered by buring oil, coal, gas, or by nuclear power or a tiny bit from hydro and wind.

Electricity is not free, never will be. I know you like the utopian idea of just converting the sun's energy to electricity and then to a battery charge. Come see me when that will work for an 18 wheeler going across the country in the winter and driving day and night.

You don't understand shit. It has been explained to you but you are to stupid. Electric vehicles make the useless wind power that gets dumped, into useful transportation power. There is a huge & growing overproduction of wind at night. There is little or no oil, coal or gas electricity production at night because wind over produces electricity at night. Even if fossil fuel is used to create electricity at a power plant it will power an electric car 3 times further than if you burn it in a gas powered car.

Wind power production is 180 degrees out of phase with power demand- "Wind turbines account for about 10 percent of Texas’s 103,000 megawatts of summer electricity-generation capacity, wind energy was able to provide just 1.3 percent of the juice the state needed on Wednesday afternoon to keep the lights on and the air conditioners humming.

None of this should be surprising. For years, ERCOT has counted just 8.7 percent of the state’s installed wind-generation capacity as “dependable capacity at peak.” What happened on Wednesday? Just 880 megawatts out of 10,135 megawatts of wind capacity — 8.68 percent — was actually moving electrons when consumers needed those electrons the most."

Tesla promises to add electric car charging stations | 89.3 KPCC

Electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc. promises to boost the number of fast-charging stations in the U.S. and Canada to make cross-country travel by electric car possible in the next year.

The company said Thursday that by the end of next month, it will triple the number of charging stations it runs from the current eight, and the number will go to around 100 in the coming year, putting stations within reach of almost the entire populations of both countries.

That would let owners of its $70,000 Model S sedans travel from Los Angeles to New York and make other long trips.

and 10 million electric cars will require how many windmills? how about 100 million? Your ignorance is only exceeded by your arrogance.

I am not resistant to change, I am resistant to change for the sake of change. Someday electric cars may be viable, today they are not. To pretend they are is just a pipe dream.

when this technology develops to where it will work for a majority of people, the free market will be all over it, we do not need to waste govt money(our money) in a vain effort to make it happen faster.

Redfish this why I support Nuclear to take the bulk of our energy generation. It's dependable at all hours but to be against wind is kind of stupid.

Wind should be 20-25% of our energy production.

I agree, we should have been building nuclear power facilities for the last 20 years, but we have not built a new one in many years. France is 60% nuclear. Are the frogs more technologically advanced than we are?

wind is unreliable and damaging to the environment. those big windmills are ugly and they kill birds.

It is my belief that France has a better energy infrastructure then the United states. More stable and far cleaner.

Your straight up ignorant. It does not take 100 million windmills to charge 10 million electric cars. :cuckoo:

1 windmill can recharge 50 electric Tesla electric cars per hour. That is about 500 cars per night per wind turbine.

what if the wind is not blowing that night? Oops, have to call in sick, battery is dead

But thats not the point. electric cars are not viable with today's technology. Thats the bottom line. Nothing is free, the power to recharge them has to be generated somehow. Power generation costs money whether you do it by wind, solar, hydro, or fossil fuels.

If and when the electric car technology advances to where it is viable, then the free market will be all over it, edison, bell, the wright brothers, gates, jobs, etc did not need govt to develop those technologies. BTW, can you name one thing that the govt does well?
