Tesla Model X Reservations Top 6,000 Cars Over Plug In Weekend | PluginCars.com

Reservations for Tesla’s all-electric Crossover SUV, the upcoming Tesla Model X, eclipsed 6,000 orders over the weekend, marking an appropriate milestone to coincide with Plug In Day 2013.

After a careful review of a reservation-logging forum post on the TeslaMotorsClub website—where details of the 5,966th Model X to be reserved was posted on Friday, and a member confirmed on Sunday reserving car number 6005—we can safely speculate that more than 39 Model X cars were reserved over the Plug In Day weekend.

Perhaps not surprising, many Model X reservation holders appear to be existing Tesla customers, with either a Roadster or a Model S already in their garage. Citing their happiness with the brand, many are looking to buy the Model X as a replacement for an existing SUV or non-electric car.

Built on a slightly modified version of the chassis found in the award-winning Tesla Model S sedan, the Model X comes with seating for seven adults; a choice of either a 60 kilowatt-hour or 85 kilowatt-hour battery pack; and the option for all-wheel-drive capability via two powerful electric motors. Despite its larger and heavier body, compared to the Model S, the extra torque of the optional all-wheel drive system gives the Model X a similar performance to the S, reaching 60 mph in less than five seconds.

Perhaps the most divisive feature of the Model X however is its patented Falcon Wing rear doors. Instead of conventional hinged doors, the two rear passenger doors lift up above the car in a similar way to gull wing doors, but also fold as they do so, promising easy access to all seats.

Looks like Musk has a winner.

If you can afford a 70K car good for you but you'll never ever recoup that money in savings on gasoline.

Wow! 6,000 sold! That's gotta be a record!

I mean with Approximately 20 million vehicles sold in 2011 and all.
