Texas Gov. Rick Perry Indicted For Abuse Of Power

I'm not a fan of Gov. Perry; but is there something illegal about his use of a veto?
The case should be redefined as: "Does the Governor of Texas have the power to veto a Bill.
If Vetoed does the Texas legislature have a means to over ride the veto.
Why doesn't the Texas legislature pass the Bill, or at least vote on it. I have a feeling it would not win a vote.

No one disputes that Perry is allowed to veto measures approved by the Legislature, including parts of the state budget. But the Austin-based Texans for Public Justice government watchdog group filed an ethics complaint accusing the governor of coercion because he threatened to use his veto before actually doing so in an attempt to pressure Lehmberg to quit

Perry is documented in telling Lehmberg if you don't resign from your position then he will veto money to do her job... this is a violation of texas constution... Perry ignored the law its that simple

He has the right to veto that budget. He also has the right to tell the public why, which is exactly what he did...........................

She's a loose cannon who got a DUI and she is currently under possible ethics violations now.............So........she's an unethical drunk supposed to try others for corruption..............LOL.........Perhaps she should charge herself..........

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A grand jury indicted Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Friday for abusing the powers of his office by carrying out a threat to veto funding for state prosecutors investigating public corruption — making the possible 2016 presidential hopeful his state's first indicted governor in nearly a century.

A special prosecutor spent months calling witnesses and presenting evidence that Perry broke the law when he promised publicly to nix $7.5 million over two years for the public integrity unit, which is run by Travis County District Rosemary Lehmberg's office. Several top aides to the Republican governor appeared before grand jurors in Austin, including his deputy chief of staff, legislative director and general counsel. Perry himself wasn't called to testify.

He was indicted by an Austin grand jury on felony counts of abuse of official capacity and coercion of a public servant. Maximum punishment on the first charge is five to 99 years in prison. The second is two to 10 years.

Doesn't sound good for Ricky's presidential ambitions.

Didn't someone else recently get in trouble for something similar? Dissolved some investigation into corruption?

another one goes down....
He shouldn't have withheld that funding from the Public Integrity Unit in Austin. That was wrong of him to do in order to go after District Attorney Lehmberg and of course once it was done it WILL bite you right back and quite harshly and just at the most inopportune time while he is still a sitting governor and a presidential aspirant. And that can't be good for him.

Bullshit.

Perry wont spend a single damned day in jail for all this bullshit indictment.

But given all the cowards in the GOP, he will have to watch his back to make sure some of them don't kick him over the ledge just to advance their own careers.

you seem pretty sure of yourself... seems Rod Blagojevich was sure of himself too... and where is he today??? Colorados federal prison ... Hey maybe Perry and rob be roomies:lol::lol::lol:

The prosecutor was convicted of DWI and refused to resign.

How can a prosecutor represent the interests of the people when she herself is a criminal?

Austin is chocked full of moonbats and a misdemeanor indictment on this charge, given the facts, only ENHANCES Perry's standing.

Please, keep trumpeting this as loudly as possible.

"The veto in question was made in accordance with the veto authority afforded to every governor under the Texas Constitution," said Mary Anne Wiley, Perry's general counsel. "We will continue to aggressively defend the governor's lawful and constitutional action, and believe we will ultimately prevail."

Perry, who is looking at making another run for president in 2016, was indicted on felony counts of abuse of official capacity and coercion of a public servant, according to the Associated Press, for carrying out a threat to veto funds set to go to state prosecutors investigating public corruption.

"The indictment is the first of its kind since 1917, when James 'Pa' Ferguson was indicted on charges stemming from his veto of state funding to the University of Texas in effort to unseat faculty and staff members he objected to. Ferguson was eventually impeached, then resigned before being convicted," the AP reported.

Update (9:31 p.m.): In an even more aggressively-worded statement, another Perry counsel, David Botsford, weighed in late Friday evening.

"I am outraged and appalled that the Grand Jury has taken this action, given the governor's constitutional right and duty to veto funding as he deems appropriate. This clearly represents political abuse of the court system and there is no legal basis in this decision. The facts of this case conclude that the governor's veto was lawful, appropriate and well within the authority of the office of the governor. Today's action, which violates the separation of powers outlined in the Texas Constitution, is nothing more than an effort to weaken the constitutional authority granted to the office of Texas governor, and sets a dangerous precedent by allowing a grand jury to punish the exercise of a lawful and constitutional authority afforded to the Texas governor," Botsford said.

This is just more typical lies and abuse by the atheistic leftwing fascists who will say or do anything to attack their enemies.

IS it any wonder that just two leftwing dictatorships account for the vast majority of government slaughters of all of human history? I am referring to the Chicoms and the USSR which account for over 137 million people killed by their own government.

And the leftwing fascists here in the US continue to give these murdering liars cover, like the New York Times that had reports like Duranty lie for decades that Stalins starvation of the Ukraine was false, while millions died of starvation the New York Times enabled Stalin to continue w ith less objection from Western powers.

And the left has only gotten worse since then.

They have no shame, no integrity and will lie whenever it suits them.

theres is nothing liberal about the USSR or russia ... there isn't anything liberal or lefty about china either ... where you get this stupidity from is beyond me

I realize you're to stupid to get that ... but thats the law ... where Perry big mouth and all, violated it ... I wonder if he can think of three reason why he violated the law:lol::lol::lol:

Enjoy your rant. This case isn't going anywhere............Perhaps you need to donate money to the drunken whore. She owes over 200k in legal fees to keep her job................and will need more money to fight her ethics case......................

You are championing a drunken whore..........That's your problem and not mine.

I'm not a fan of Rick Perry, but this is bullshit.

The woman he cut off funding to was busted for a DUI.

This is venue shopping at its very worst.

How is threatening to veto something and then doing it a crime.....

It's only a Crime if You're a Right Wing Icon. Lefties are Immune from the Law .

Whether it be Obama who has committed more imnpeachable offnse than even Slick Willy ,Democratic lawmakers or local Dems at all levels of government, it’s becoming more apparent that malevolence and corruption are at the core of what drives liberal politicians. Meanwhile a conservative better cross his t's and dot his I's or they'll be seeking an indictment - Justifiable or Not. .

He is being charged for promising to use his lawful authority and following through. You really think Texans are going to convict him for doing what he promised he would do?

The man is being indicted for fighting corruption solely because he is a Republican.

Here is a crazy idea. How about we support the politicians who oppose corruption in government and eliminate the one who at fine with corruption regardless of their party affiliation?

There is an old saying about how easy it is to indict a ham sandwich in Texas. This is standard politics. It also is an indication of the character of Texas Democrats.
