Charlize Theron was asked by her boyfriend Sean Penn to go to his high school reunion (Santa Monica High School) with him. The celebrity-couple were a media-favorite, and they wanted to attend Penn's reunion. Theron was thinking about how media fostered a natural fascination with the private lives of celebrities and considered why attending the Santa Monica High reunion would encourage harmless gossip about successful Americans returning to their hometown roots. However, what Theron did not know was that one classmate of Penn's (Evans Freund) had become a terrorist and was planning to show up at the reunion with a pen fitted with a powerful explosive (a plastic-bomb).
The Santa Monica High reunion was to be held at McSorley's Old Ale House (an Irish pub) in NYC (even though the high school itself was located in California). The reunion-planners wanted a small and intimate gathering at an iconic culture-rich NYC pub, since celebrity Sean Penn had informed the planning-committee that he was attending with his celebrity-girlfriend (Charlize Theron). Evans Freund was going to show up at McSorley's for the reunion with his pen-bomb and send an anonymous notice to the NY Post (before the reunion) that the terrorism-deed at the Santa Monica reunion at McSorley's was perpetrated by an IRA (Irish Republican Army) faction!
The Santa Monica reunion-planning committee had hired a special artist to design special colorful tavern-themed portraits for the reunion. Penn and Theron were all set to attend, and, unfortunately, so was Evans Freund. Freund was a comic book fanatic and often dressed up as the Scarecrow (DC Comics), pretending he was some kind of 'prophet' about capitalism's neglectful attitude towards the harvest. The Santa Monica reunion at McSorley's was set for October 25th (a Saturday evening!). The special art-portraits were mounted, and McSorley's was reserved for the Santa Monica High party that night. McSorley's had even hired a special photographer to record the high school celebrity-reunion event.
The night before the event, Theron had a strange dream while sleeping. She dreamt that a Santa Monica High classmate of Penn's was going to show up as an anti-social terrorist of some kind, and when Theron woke in a cold sweat, she told Penn about her dream. Penn dismissed the dream as some kind of pre-party celebrity-media jitters, but Theron was still nervous. Theron decided to purchase a fancy plastic toy water-rifle that day (before going to the event) --- at a NYC toy-store --- and go to the McSorley's reunion carrying the gun as a 'media-gimmick' gesture. When people at McSorley's started asking Penn and Theron why Theron was 'wielding' a fancy plastic toy water-rifle to the pub/reunion, Theron explained, "Always bring a gun to a publicized reunion (to promote non-violence)!" Evans Freund was there and noticed Theron saying that (carrying her gun) and decided not to set off his explosive pen (since photographers were fascinated by her PC gun gesture!).
Well, the reunion went beautifully, and afterwards Penn asked Theron why she really did bring that fancy toy water-rifle, and she told him that she thought a classmate would attend with the intent to bring a bomb (for terrorism!), since McSorley's was an iconic culture-rich Irish pub in NYC(!). Penn thought the idea was clever (since the PC gun-gesture would detract attention away from any hypothetical anti-reunion terrorism-act!). Penn was also grateful (that nothing dangerous occurred at the reunion), since he was a fan of both McSorley's and IRA-oriented folklore in America. He didn't want his high school reunion to be marred by any terrorism-oriented act that would reflect sorely on McSorley's and then create some kind of 'bad urban gossip' for IRA-oriented political peace-talks in America! It was, all in all, an ideal media event. Evans Freund never achieved his fantasy of creating 'school-reunion democracy terror.'
