The Rothschild conspiracy theorists have been around for a while, and most of them start their theory of Rothschild reign with the battle of Waterloo, where, the theory goes, the Rothschild intelligence network (the truly rich all have them) got information back to London that the Brits won a day or so before everyone else (yeah, seems implausible, but anyway). The Rothschilds then spread the rumor that the Brits lost at Waterloo and almost everyone started selling their stocks at fire sale prices, and the Rothschilds secretly bought as much as they could. When the facts arrived in London, the Rothschilds made the windfall that established them at the top of the English financial system.

The problem with all this is that, though the Rothshilds are very wealthy, they are not nearly so wealthy as the aggregate of royal/noble families in Europe, nor as influential as the various churches. The Rothschilds and everyone else in the financial industry are very vulnerable to asset confiscation as happened in Russia shortly after the Russian revolution. Buy the time of WW2 Stalin had purged most who had links back to the western banks and those banks had lost everything that they had invested in the Soviet Union.

When people believe in a pattern of behind the scene events, they see that pattern at every turn, even when it makes absolutely no sense. That is why so many fall down that rabit hole of omniscient, omnipotent conspiracies that get more insane as time goes by.

There are legitimate conspiracy theories, but there is a point of no return when delving into these shadowy propositions.
