In a dependant and enslaved country.
Suppose that this NSA/NDAA era evolves into a centralized police state. So long as daily oppression remains tolerable, the ability to overthrow the tyranny would be very low.

However, in such a world, loyalty to the Dear Leaders would be abysmally low. Now suppose a foreign enemy invades the states of WA/OR/CA/AK/HI . Would there be enough "patriotic/loyal" will to muster in order to defend the Union which no longer abides by its Charter (Constitution) and shits on the People.

Why would we want to defend a government that preserves the Too-big-too-fail plutocracy and violates the People regularly?
