NYC was based on the Socialized Erie Canal but Canada had better Great Lakes canal sites and for the past 60 years since Canada finished the seaway Albany hasn't been getting unearned revenues to buy votes and elections. The same is true about what happened to the Michigan-Illinois canal.

LA is still a D machine because New Orleans is still the Mississippi outlet to the sea.

The left coast is in the process of losing free money due to the expansion of the Panama Canal. Between fires, floods and landslides getting from the coast to the plains in a predictable fashion is not dependable logistics for most products.

As long as socialism is confined to logistics and infrastructure it can more or less work.
