I bought my first home in the early 70's, parlayed the equity several times into buying the home where we live now. Taking care of my homes - that is the difference between being physical responsible, as I am, and being physically conservative and kicking the can down the road - allowed me to sell my homes with a good deal of sweat equity and move on up.

I earned every bit of the safety retirement I now receive and used most of the money from my inheritance to pay off my older son's college debt, and by a home for my younger son and his wife who needed to walk away from the condo they owned which went way underwater during the Bush&Co. Great Recession.

Oh, and safety retirement ain't so bad (3%@50 + Ventura).

Postscript: Tell your idiot pal that welfare, i.e. AFDC was replaced in the late 90's by TANF. And, btw I never collected either nor earned minimum wage or needed UE insurance.
