All the leftwing 'comedians' are nasty and full of hate. Robin Williams and Letterman are two more. Always a sharp edge to their 'humor'. Leno isn't like that. Neither was Bob Hope. Unhappy? People with an edge are often speaking out against wrongs. Carlin, as an example hated corruption and attacked it every chance he got. And still made people laugh for 40+ years.

Yes, Bob Hope did it without profanity. At least in most of his career. But not because he wanted it that way. But because he couldn't get away with it in his day. Bob Hope could be as profane as any modern comedian.

Carlin did a lot of cocaine in the 1970s, by his own admission. And he was a pot smoker throughout the 60s and 70s.

But he was not messed up on alcohol until the end, as you claim. That is just a lie.

And his fans were far more likely to be thinkers than not. His humor required it.
