We didn't have to do anything for Venezuela's underinvestment and total mismanagement of their oil industry to screw their economy.

This is largely true, but we have stolen over a billion in their reserves, sanctioned other countries that wish to invest there, recognized a phony “President” there with no power, and prevented negotiations between opposition and gov’t there that can resolve the crisis … at least enough to get the oil flowing. Venezuela is no threat to U.S., doesn’t support terrorists (like the Saudis) and now wants to deal. Our policy is absurd, especially now, but all the “ tough on Cuba and Venezuela” crowd and Biden’s fear of criticism from that quarter is preventing a resolution. Most of the high tech but relatively expensive oil fracking industry and big oil investors long really did not want Venezuelan (and Iranian) sources to undercut them, and now we are prisoners of this bipartisan policy.

OPEC is always cheaper than US oil. Our lift costs are high. Trump sanctioned Venezuela in 2017. And we haven't been KSA's primary market in 15 years. You just don't know anything about the oil business.

He doesn't have the power to start or stop an oil companies bust or boom cycle.
He can end the sanctions on Venezuela, Iran and Russia and allow oil companies to import oil. That's something that could cause an immediate drop in prices.

Absolutely true. Had not Trump ended the JCPOA agreement with Iran, Europeans and Asians would be buying huge quantities of Iranian oil lowering global prices and — possibly — the rightwing theocrats there would face a serious domestic political opposition today.

I do not think dictator Putin would have been so quick to invade Ukraine if he knew oil was cheap on world markets. But now that he has done so it is impossible to simply ignore his blatant and violent aggression. A peace negotiation, rather than an endless and dangerous “proxy war,” must be sought soon, however, and the U.S. must not aim instead to destroy the regime or the Russian Federation completely. We should not encourage Ukraine to believe we will finance and arm them to retake Crimea.

Oil companies transferring all their unprofitable wells to a shell company that goes bankrupt so they don't have to plug gas leaks, plug the well or clean up their mess. That way tax payers have to hire them to do it.
