Does the new emporer have a man-bun like the OP?

Admittedly, HRH Naruhito is a weapons grade nerd. He makes Prince Charles look like Rambo.

But Masako-sama is kind of a babe ... so it balances out.

Never underestimate the nerd look.

Bill Gates looked like a nerd...and we all how that turned out.

When I lived in Japan, prior to her forced betrothal and marriage, it was widely acknowledged that she was much smarter than him would have had a spectacular career in the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

It rained on their wedding day for a reason.

What, you want to review the influence of First Ladies on every US President over the last 50 years?

Masako-sama isn't a 'First Lady', and she has absolutely no influence on the government of Japan and less influence on the details of her personal life.

As I said before, her marriage to the Crown Prince was forced upon her, and the subsequent badgering and restrictions to her personal freedom by the Japanese Household Agency have driven her to nervous exhaustion.

She was well-known in Japan prior to her betrothal to HRH Naruhito and quickly becoming a symbol of the New Japanese Woman, smart, professional, and self-determining.

What was done to her, in my opinion, is a travesty.

So the Emperor has zero influence?

I doubt that. Agreed these roles are mostly ceremonial, like the Queen in the Commonwealth. But to the extent he has influence, she does.

You think she would have more influence as eye candy in a Japanese corporation? You would be mistaken, and probably do not understand the culture as much as you infer.

So the Emperor has zero influence?

The 1947 Constitution of Japan (written during and with input from the American Occupation Government) specifically forbids the the Emperor from serving as nominal head of state or as the Commander in Chief of the Military (both functions reside with the Prime Minister).

Unlike the King or Queen of England.

The Emperors role is to ceremonially proclaim the decrees of government without the power of veto. He confirms the Prime Minister but is not allowed to override the decisions of the Japanese Parliament (Diet).

The Empress has no official functions .. she is, quite literally, a baby machine. Her sole function in the Japanese government is to produce a male heir for succession. Something that, to date, she is unable to do. Masako-sama is now in her late 50's and suffering from health issues. It his highly unlikely she will produce a male heir ... something for which she has suffered greatly.

Masako-sama, didn't work for a Japanese corporation. Prior to becoming the Empress of Japan, she was a graduate of the Harvard School of Economics and did her post-graduate studies at Oxford while working for the Japanese Foreign Ministry. Prior to attending her post-graduate studies, she was a diplomat assigned to work with the OECD.

She speaks five languages fluently and was one of only 28 persons (out of 800) who passed the entrance exam into the Foreign Ministry (only two other women).

She was being groomed for a senior position with the Foreign Ministry, like her father (who publicly opposed her marriage to the Prince).

Something with which you may be unaware, Japanese companies resist hiring women who have been schooled abroad or who have worked for foreign companies because it is believed they would have a hard time fitting into Japanese business culture.

Masako-sama, had she been allowed to follow her chosen profession, would have been ideally suited to kill that idiotic stereotype.

She agreed to marry him in 1992.

Empress is a diplomatic role. Her resume fits. What else would give her more influence?
