Russia destroyed the majority of Ukraine's airforce, military infrastrcture, hardware and their entire navy in the first month of the war. Unlike Ukraine, Russia can afford the losses as we can just manufacture new ones quickly. And once the war is won, Russia will have new industries to compensante for the losses.

After Viet Nam we did not wise up. We ended the military draft and made it a volunteer service. We had a few quick incursions and the Soviet Union barely fell when Bush the first got us into a War. That started us into at least three decades spending trillions and trillions of dollars. We leave Afghanistan a few months ago and the war drums start up again. Russia has strategic interest with some of those areas. And they keep them under control which is more important. We keep pushing and there may be consequences at some point somewhere.
