U.S. Soldiers Punished For Not Attending Christian Concert

In a Basic Training or AIT environment trainees (trainees not Soldiers) are kept to restricted areas such as the barracks unless on pass at all times. It is their normal place of duty and not a punishment.

Did you miss the part where they said they had to lay in their bunks, no electronics, nothing....and if they were caught doing anything other than laying in thier bunks they would loose their weekend passes. That is punishment.

The ones who went to this forced religious crap didnt have these restrictions. Do you not get it?

Did you miss the part where barracks restriction without entertainment devices, electronics, etc is NORMAL and part of the duty while in training

It is not a fucking punishment, and it is quite evident you never served in the military with your lack of being able to grasp this common occurrence

I did 20 years and went to all kinds of schools...that is a fucking punishment. Its called LOCK DOWN. Its was not basic training...it was not boot camp!

"Those of us that chose not to attend (about 80, or a little less that half) were marched back to the company area. At that point the NCO issued us a punishment. We were to be on lock-down in the company (not released from duty), could not go anywhere on post (no PX, no library, etc). We were to go to strictly to the barracks and contact maintenance. If we were caught sitting in our rooms, in our beds, or having/handling electronics (cell phones, laptops, games) and doing anything other than maintenance, we would further have our weekend passes revoked and continue barracks maintenance for the entirety of the weekend. At that point the implied message was clear in my mind 'we gave you a choice to either satisfy us or disappoint us. Since you chose to disappoint us you will now have your freedoms suspended and contact chores while the rest of your buddies are enjoying a concert.'

Fuck it, I'm just going to start passing out negs to the stupidity in here.

And Zona, I talk about specific things that happened during my career if they are relevant to the topic, and then very little. So no, I will not talk about what specifically I have or have not done.

I have nothing but respect for our military members in here...even glorified ups drivers who look down on members they say are "desk jockeys"... and never were in the shit..

Nice leap... too bad you landed short... I usually think better of you, Jill

At Fort Eustis, he promoted a series of concerts, featuring Christian performers, aimed at awakening Soldiers' spiritual awareness.

"The idea is not to be a proponent for any one religion," he said. "It's to have a mix of different performers with different religious backgrounds."

Chambers acknowledges without trepidation that there are some Soldiers who lack the moral upbringing or ethical consciousness to fulfill their promise as Soldiers.

Not REMOTELY what you contended AT ALL

Funny... we have Chaplains, chapels, etc paid for as well.. and rightfully so

Epic fail Jill, epic fail

Can you not read? From my original link:

On May 13, 2010, about eighty soldiers, stationed at Fort Eustis while attending a training course, were punished for opting out of attending one of these Christian concerts. The headliner at this concert was a Christian rock band called BarlowGirl, a band that describes itself as taking "an aggressive, almost warrior-like stance when it comes to spreading the gospel and serving God."

But there has been no "mix of different performers with different religious backgrounds" at these concerts. Every one of them has had evangelical Christian performers, who typically not only perform their music but give their Christian testimony and read from the Bible in between songs.

Again, I do not brag. Nor do I talk about many places I served. And I was never a ups driver and my MOS placed me in the shit more often than any Navy personnel specialist. I told you to stay out of my business. When I criticize someone it is usually because they ask for it.

Lock down just means not released from duty.

One soldier is quoted here characterizing it as "punishment" doesn't make it "punishment".

It's not that the sources aren't credible as much as the stories are the same info.

I was artillery in the Army. I served 11 years before I got out. Every where I was stationed either in combat, hostile environment or back in garrison it was always the same. When you were offered a program during duty hours you had two choices. You could go to the program or stay behind with an NCO. Either place was consider you place of duty until everyone met back up and was dismissed for the day. I stayed back on a few occasions with the NCO and I was the NCO in charge of the stay backs a couple of times.

It was understood by most that if you stayed back you would most likely be cleaning the common areas, barracks and the motor pool. How much other things you did was up to the discretion of the NCO in charge. Of course the new recruits did not learn this unless they stayed behind or one of the vets told them what would happen. After that they made their mind on whether to go or stay with that in mind. I believed it to be standard procedure and not a punishment. I would if anything say it was a consequence of your decision.

I read where some stated that this was a school not basic training. When I went to any school be it basic train, AIT, Air Borne, PLDC, CUE School, BNOC or ANOC we were all treated the same as if we were in basic. You may have had a few more privileges after dismissal but while on duty you worked until dismissal.

That is punishment Ollie. Come on dude....just admit it..you are wrong. So is this general.

PMs are private. You hide behind them. You know why and I know why and most people on the board know why.

Fat ass.

Alcohol really packs on the pounds, though, so her double-wide ass is understandable.

Here we go. CG cannot fight her own battles. She has to take her sidekick with her everywhere. You're just her stooge, aren't you?? How sad. Now the same goes for you. There will be no childish back and forth today. It's stupid and boring for other people and you two don't know when to stop. Nice talkin' to ya, Miss Stooge.
'Fighting'? One assumes relatively even opponents when that word is used. It's a riot that you don't even realize what a cartoon you are.

C'mon, send me another PM. Those are even more ramped up than your posts in the laugh-riot arena.

I don't know what you think you're accomplishing. What is with all of this fat ass crap?? You have never seen me in your life. I had my picture posted for a long time of me and my niece. It's pretty obvious that I'm not fat. What am I saying!!! You always ignore truth that you don't like. Why, thank you. That means you've seen the picture and you just wish I were fat. And in your world, wishing makes it so. Got it!!

PMs are private. You hide behind them. You know why and I know why and most people on the board know why.

Fat ass.

Thanks for that lucid, intelligent response. It clears things up immensely. Now that's it for you today. If you think you're going to engage me in this back and forth high school crap, forget it. Later.

Fuck off, ya fat assed bitch. Go hide behind PMs... that's what nasty little bitches like you do. I wonder how many people on this board would think you anything other than an evil minded nasty fat assed bitch if they could see your PMs. Resorting to talking about the dead in order to score cheap points... you're a fucking fat assed bitch. I don't forget.

So far, three PMs from Rinata this morning. So predictable.

ETA: Make that four.

That is not punishment, you poser... that is the status quo for privates in training.... you do not just get free time when the rest of your company is attending a function... I spent 10 months in AIT, I know EXACTLY how things work... these little whiners are lucky that during these duty hours, they were not kept busy with KP or mowing the grass, or police detail of the parade grounds, and so many other things us real vets experienced during 'down time' while in training status

Give it up, chump

I have a feeling the "go to a religious function or else..." status quo isn't going to last too many more years.

Nice try... not what it was

It was optional to go to a concert featuring a 'christian' entertainer... just as it was optional for me to go to a USO tour with the Kentucky Headhunters and America... just as it was optional to go to a USO show with Margret Cho and Jerry Seinfeld... just as it was optional to go to the chapel on Sunday mornings... and those who did not opt to go KNEW they were not just free to romp around as they chose to... that in fact they were going to be on 'detail' because THEY ARE STILL ON MOTHERFUCKING DUTY IN MOTHERFUCKING TRAINING STATUS

God you people are dense

As far as Major General James E. Chambers is concerned, being in the U.S. Army also means being in God’s army too. For the past several years, Chambers, the born-again commander of first Fort Eustis and then Fort Lee in Virginia, has wanted his soldiers to attend a Spiritual Fitness Concert Series, which promotes Christianity, especially the evangelical variety. The events include readings from the Bible and rock music from bands like BarlowGirl, which believes in “an aggressive, almost warrior-like stance when it comes to spreading the gospel and serving God.”

Failure to attend the concert series has resulted in soldiers being punished. About 80 troops stationed at Fort Eustis opted not to go to this year’s May event and were put on lock-down, which meant being confined to their barracks and ordered to perform maintenance duties. Nine of the punished soldiers complained to superiors.

My question is, "why is it a Christian concert'? Is being Christian now required in the military even in leisure time?
