The only real difference is government policy. People in TAIWAN on average are older which makes them more vulnerable to the virus. But that difference does not matter, because TAIWAN prevented large penetration into the country by the virus. The United States failed to do the same.

Taiwan is open, people going about their normal daily lives. Why? The infection rate is tiny, so tiny that only one person has died since May, and when there are infections, TAIWANS contact tracers go out and isolate anyone that has come into contact with the infected person.

In the United States, there is no contact tracing. The number of cases is impossibly too high to do effective contact tracing.
