US Embassy Acting Chargé d’Affaires Christopher Rowan in Sudan has affirmed his country's support to boosting peace in the country. The US has sent food support to Sudan with the program of USAID, which the US official considered a first batch of support that will continue in the future.
He added “The people of the United States remain committed to helping people in need in Sudan with life-saving food and other assistance,”
The aid is estimated at 47 metric tonnes of food assistance from the USAID office of food for peace, according to Adnan Khan, the Director of World Food Program for Sudan. In addition to its assistance aimed at Darfur, Blue Nile and South Kordufan, the USAID also provides support for 130,000 school children in the Red Sea state.
It is to be noted that the WFP is the only partner to the USAID in this regard.
The Governor of Red Sea Mohamed Tahir Eila called on the WFP to supply additional support and contribute to the reconstruction of schools and providing food to school children.
It is worth noting also that the Food for Education Programme provides food to 60,000 school children.
It is to be noted that the Red Sea has allocated 20% of its budget for education.
Earlier the USAID coordinated with UNAMID and the government of Sudan to ensure delivery of food supplies to the vulnerables in Darfur, South Kordufan and Blue Nile.
The Director of WFP in Sudan revealed that the organization is currently faced with 43% deficit in its budget as of today, but assured that such deficit does not constitute a concern and can be handled in the first quarter of this year.
