Vietnamese authorities have seized nearly three tons of illegal ivory hidden among boxes of fruit. The Southeast Asian country has increased efforts to tackle wildlife smuggling trade.
Police seized a total of 2,748 kilograms (6,058 pounds) of elephant tusks in the province of Thanh Hoa.

The ivory was hidden inside cartons of fruit which were being transported on the back of a truck on its way to Hanoi, the Tuoi Tre newspaper reported Sunday.

Nguyen Truong Son, the driver of the truck, was detained by police. He claimed he was unaware of what he was transporting.

"This is the largest seizure of smuggled ivory ever in Thanh Hoa province," the newspaper article said.

Now if they could just "crack down" before the tusks are taken........there might be a bit more progress.

What they need to do is realize banning ivory isn't going to work. If there was a regulated supply, taken from animals at the end of their life governments could make a killing off of it, and the $$ taken could be used to go after the poachers, and anyone that buys from them.

Buy ivory from a non-government source? Lose all your ivory stuff, which then the government numbers, and sells. After a while any un-numbered ivory can be considered contraband.

Tried and failed.

This won't stop until they're all gone.

The problem is the eco nazis have set it up so that the elephants no longer have value in many places in Africa. Thus, there is no money to fight the poachers, nor is there a desire to protect the elephants. It is only in those country's that still allow sport hunting that the elephant populations are steady. But it is a huge problem and one that desperately needs to be addressed.

What I am proposing has never been tried.
