Walmart Calls Out The Nation for its Low-Wage Internship Program - The Daily Beast

The Daily Beast reports that Walmart is a little tired of being criticized over how much it pays its employees, especially by news outlets that regularly use no-wage or low-wage interns. In an open letter to Walmart, the left-leaning Nation called on the nation's largest private sector employer to raise the pay of its employees.

Wednesday, Steve Restivo, senior director of communications for Walmart, fired back.

In an email with the subject header, “people who live in glass houses…”, Restivo wrote:

The Nation—“America’s leading progressive print and online magazine”—recently encouraged its readers to sign an open letter demanding that Walmart increase wages to $12/hour and this article called our company one of the “biggest abusers of low-wage labor.”

In an ironic twist, ProPublica recently reported that starting this fall, “interns at the Nation Institute will be paid minimum wage for the first time in the history of the 30-year-old program.” As ProPublica noted, The Nation has been paying its full-time interns a weekly stipend of $150 per week—less than the current federal minimum wage rate of $7.25 per hour.

According to the Daily Beast, Walmart pays its store employees an average of $12 to $13 an hour, which works out to around $25,000 a year.

EDGE:

It isn't well-known in the General Public but the vast majority of the brighter young hopeful journalists fresh out of their $200k Ivy League School don't even get paid when they Intern for the DISGUSTING FILTH in the LSM.

Which helps explain why there are so many idiot libtards in the profession.

Who in their right mind would go to a School like Columbia, with its VERY tough 'Core Curriculum' and where tuition costs plus R&B can be as much as $60k a year and then go get a job that doesn't pay.... Anything.

On the hope that, maybe someday, if you're really lucky and suck the right people, maybe someday you'll be on the air.

About a one in one-thousand chance.

good.

I am sick and tired to hear about Walmart from the hypocrites who pay even LESS

So the press whines "Up yours" while it wants you to "entitle me...."

They're morons.

There is such ignorance of economics on the part of the MAJORITY of Americans especially those advocating $15 minimum wage.
For example NONE I guarantee NONE of the majority of those in favor of $15.00 wage KNOW that the employer
MATCHES dollar for dollar what the employee pays in Medicare and Social security!
So that $15.00 wage is really at 6.2% for SS and 1.45% for Medicare the employer pays in addition to the $15.00 then
another $1.15 per hour! So that becomes $16.15 NOT just $15.00!

But that is just part of the economy these idiots don't understand!

All those people that want $15.00 minimum wage seem to be so ok with Lawyers making $200 billion a year!
An average of Quick Facts: Lawyers
2010 Median Pay $112,760 per year
$54.21 per hour
On-the-job Training None
Number of Jobs, 2010 728,200
Job Outlook, 2010-20 10% (About as fast as average)
Employment Change, 2010-20 73,600
Lawyers : Occupational Outlook Handbook : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Now guess what these lawyers have done according to 90% of physicians..
$850 billion a year in WASTED DUPLICATE TESTs, etc. all due to fear of lawsuits!

Which group of people are harming MORE people economically while making $110,000 a year!!!
