Now, no doubt, the climate of Palestine is not so severe as the climate of this country; but even there, though the heat of the day be considerable, the cold of the night, from December to February, is very piercing, and it was not the custom for the shepherds of Judea to watch their flocks in the open fields later than about the end of October. *

I don't celebrate Christmas, but I just say "thank you."

You could even say Merry Christmas right back to the well-wisher -- saying that wouldn't compromise anyone's beliefs, I wouldn't think. And would be a friendly thing to say.

So what?

Christmas is now celebrated by people around the world, whether they are Christians or not. It's a time when family and friends come together and remember the good things they have. People, and especially children, also like Christmas as it's a time when you give and receive presents!

Only pinch faced scolds are bothered by this!
