He was in remission, meaning no signs of disease. He was not on therapy, meaning his immune system was not affected. He had no reason to be malnourished because of his cancer that wasn’t being treated and had no signs of recurrence.

If someone is under current treatment for cancer or requires a BM transplant, they’d clearly be far more susceptible.
