First, it's a uphill climb when the economy is doing so well. Second, as I see it, the Democrats have been pressured by the "Progressives" to basically support socialism. They are stuck between a rock and a hard place, trying to remain somewhat capitalist, while not wanting to lose the valuable votes of the young socialists.
