Why do use a Bible when the first Christians didn't?

During Jesus' ministry period there were no Bibles. Not even a single Christian text yet, nor would there be for at least 30 years after Jesus' death (or whatever.) And what would become the New Testament didn't exist until at least 100 years after-Jesus. Even then, the first Bibles wouldn't exist for several centuries more.

So if you follow Jesus (or more likely Paul) identifying as a Christian, why use a book neither Jesus nor his disciples or their followers used?
because we don't have Paul or Peter in church on Sunday telling us about Jesus in person......they are dead......

Great OP and a horrible dilemma for Biblical literalists.
lol.....why do you think its a problem?....

let's think this through for a minute.....(assuming you aren't an atheist. which might preclude the possibility).......Jesus for example gave the Sermon on the Mount......he did not need a copy of the Sermon on the Mount.......he SPOKE the Sermon on the Mount.......the first Christians (30 AD to 50 AD) did not need a written copy of the Sermon on the Mount.......there were people around who had heard the Sermon on the Mount who could tell them about it......then those people started dying off from old age......somebody said....."we should write this stuff down"...and they did.....and copies of it were passed around to other churches......and eventually, they were all put together into a single Bible......

so where is this dilemma about Jesus not having a copy of something written later about what he said and did?.......

You do have Benny Hinn who is just as worthy of your fawning adulation and worship as the jeebus.

Thanks to all of you for posting.

You are a slightly skewed representation of the varieties of Christianity.

One correction: the fundamentalists, Pentecostals, evangelicals, all of whom together make up a heretical minority of American Christianity -- you folks are not going to rule American with your beliefs. Just trot away, because it won't happen.

Pleeeeeease .......... use common sense, and you can answer that question yourself. Had that second cup yet? If not, get it to clear your head a little, or a lot.

Jesus taught what he taught absent a Bible. I wonder then if Christians have effectively abandoned Jesus' teachings for a book they placed too much importance upon.

How often do Christians say, "The Bible says..." instead of "Jesus taught..."
To Christians, the Bible is the word of GOD, the teachings of Jesus, and a guide for all of us to live by. The Bible teaches love above all else. Jesus was given the word by the father, GOD. Man took what Jesus said and put it into words, either through stories handed down through generations, or in writings. Even though the Bible has been translated many times, in many different languages, the basic meanings were carried forward each time. The Bible stands as the word of GOD, and the teachings of Jesus.

Salvation does not come through Biblical literalism at all: to suggest so is heresy.

Salvation comes through Jesus Christ. Period.

Hollie will follow shortly with the opposite rebuttal, we will all nod, pat her on the head, and send her on her way. I will quote this when she does it.

I'd love to discuss it with you, if I thought for one moment that you were serious. The phrase pearls before swine mean anything to you?

That is why serious folks will not discuss serious subjects seriously with you, Mr.Right.

Why would the new testament cease to be an authority because the apostles didn't use it? It's an authority because they wrote it.

Every dispensation of the gospel has been characterized.with additional scripture because those called of God to teach the plan of redemption write their testimony of what God has communicated to them which becomes scripture.

Deuteronomy 13:1 (12:last in Bibles being corrupted) says not to add to or take away from commandments in Torah.

So what do you call the NT?

And then there are a dozen more chapters in Deuteronomy. Did Moses sin in writing after verse 1?

According to tradition, the Early Church was composed of members who were under the direction of the "Holy Spirit"

Of course church pastors who misconstrue Bible scriptures to fit their own ridiculous narratives also claim to possess the Holy Spirit, but hey...

If you obtain the Holy Spirit you will reject the idea that the Bible is all that God has said because the Holy Spirit is God and when He speaks to you He is speaking scripture.

Is this even a serious question???

made me LOL

I think literacy was a real issue in early Christian times.

Plus, if the Bible is based on real events...it couldn't have been written until after the fact...right?
