Exactly what was secret about US support for Syrian rebels against Assad? Everyone knew about it. Obama asked Congress for an authorization to send in troops and Congress declined. Everyone involved had issues with some of the less savoury elements among the rebel factions, but that does not make Assad any better either.

There are no good guys or bad guys in the Middle East. They are all various shades of awful. The Isreali's included. One would think that a people which has been marginalized and brutalized as badly as the Isreali's, would treat minorities better. The Muslim nations have been brutalizing each other since recorded history began. If the region wasn't awash in oil, no one would care. They could continue on with their tribal wars and leave the rest of the world out of it.
