They ended because potential black ghetto rioters were afraid Nixon would clear the streets with machine gun fire. If the police and National Guard are prepared to move quickly in Ferguson there will be little lawlessness. Rioters and looters need to be shot on sight. The blacks in Ferguson need to be clearly given this message: "When the looting starts, the shooting starts."

White vigilante action would be helpful too. I have read that the Klu Klux Klan is prepared to act.

During the 1960's liberals and radicals were foolish enough to see the black ghetto riots as vindication of the civil rights movement, rather than vindication of what those who had opposed the civil rights movement had been warning about.

The Kerner Commission Report, which was published in February 1968, blamed white racism and racial discrimination for the riots. It did not explain why there were no riots in the South, where presumably white racism and racial discrimination were more severe. It did not explain why the riots began after the Civil Rights Act and the War on Poverty, rather than before.

I think and hope that President Obama has the sense to realize that black ghetto riots win votes for Republican politicians.
