So I think we can agree, then, that it's a matter of degree. The only way the two ends of the debate can get at least SOME of what they want is if they're both willing to admit that.

And yeah, I think both ends are justified in wanting to give up as little as possible, and I think we can also agree that absolutism can only be tried in the very earliest part of a negotiation. At some point, compromises have to be made.

That's why I'm not sure what to believe here. The absolutists scream "no compromise", but they can't possibly be serious - or are they?

There are a few issues I can find no ground for compromise. The RKBA is not up for compromise, in fact I want the GCA of '33, 68 and 86 repealed. There is no ground I would be willing to give up there.

Globally Whining is complete and utter bullshit. It is a scam to fleece the tax payers. There is no room for "compromise" wasting billions for "research" on a purely contrived crisis that can't be "fixed" even if human endeavors were responsible.

Illegal immigration must be stopped. No discussion.

Voter ID to prevent fraud must be mandatory. No discussion.

Welfare is a criminal program. We have millions of people stuck in a cycle of dependency, criminal justice, poverty and ignorance. The democrooks deliberately dig their heels on any attempt to undermine dependency by howling racism over budget cuts. They maintain a criminal justice system that perpetuates "thug life" and never actually reforms people from a life other than dealing in a drug culture, while maintaining a belief they're victims of "the (white republican) rich". They promote a mentality with demagogues who marginalize the concept of work ethic, morality and thrift. They run school systems where teachers fear the students, fail to teach them job skills, and reinforce PC madness. There is no way I would accept a deal to allow this to continue.

The democrooks have stolen the independence, motivation, self respect and the dignity of millions of people who believe the best they can get out of life is a squalid existence in a ghetto or trailer park, and they owe that meager standard of living to criminally insane totalitarian sociopaths in the democrook party. It might be actually more humane if the democrooks herded them into warehouses and gassed them, rather than using their votes for political power just to enrich themselves.

As far as faggot "weddings" go I don't give a fruit fly's fuck.

I don't want liberals to stop getting abortions. That is a net gain for the genepool. It is the most savage shit known to man, but I won't have one, nor will anyone in my family.

I believe pot should be legal, and I wouldn't oppose whatever the most hardcore moonbat reform of drug policy seeks.

Eating rat meat will not hurt you if it'still cooked properly.

A more significant point to me however, is why the feds need to be in charge of simple QC inspections? Are these not things that can be done at the state level? Furthermore, in spite of federal inspectors running around, things still go wrong and people get sick. It'seems the civil suits that truly keep businesses in line, not the feds.

That is a vague concept at best. How does this manifest with you, personally? How damaged to you feel your personal freedoms and liberties by any given government involvement/existence in (or out of) your life?

Because the spirit of this thread is very simplistic and binary, it would appear that any intervention causes unacceptable damage.

My argument is that freedoms and liberties, on a macro level, exist on a continuum, and that the key is finding proper equilibrium, and that binary, absolutist arguments are pointless and counter-productive.

But it's true. There is no essential difference between communism, socialism, Liberalism and/or Progressivism. At the heart of each is a faith and adherence to big, overarching government, the representative of the collective, at the cost of individual liberty and freedom.
