I think the kind of legislation being pursued has a huge impact on civility, and it's not usually taken into consideration. We focus on the media, partisans, etc... but it's hard to be civil about a proposed law that strips you of your fundamental rights. And the sad fact is, we've lost consensus on what those rights are.

i completely disagree our "rights" are god given and in fact a "right". to me they are a luxury of a system we put in place to give us "rights" we all share, based on a common ground of what we all find to be decency to each other.

While I agree our differences are what made us great, we now disagree at such a fundamental level I'm not sure there's a way to iron things out. When we were primarily immigrants looking to escape oppression, we all had a common desire to see freedom as the primary goal. That's not the case now.

Because we're trying to apply government solutions to those those issues. Government doesn't account for "disagreement". If you disagree with government's plans, you go to jail.

the rights are spelled out in the constitution and the constitution as far as i know doesn't segment them into isolated groups and say one group should have more or less rights than the other. we put groups in front of "rights" as do we "american" and then each group then feels they don't have the same rights as an old white man these days. i still don't know what that means or how it applies but each "group" now feels left out and like they're not getting their fair share in life.

Agreed. This is a huge part of the problem. Rights aren't privileges granted to special interest groups.

The post I originally responded to was not talking about elected officials or people bragging about immunity to prosecution. It said that that there was no reason to treat Democrats as human beings. It appeared to mean all Democrats, not just whichever subset you felt like discussing.

Antifa doesn't seem overly concerned with the law either, or the city officials that let them run wild.

A lot of people who participate in Antifa events are very likely to hate the Democratic party just slightly less than you do (and a bit more than I do ). But again, most Democrats are not participants in antifa rallies.

Letting repeat offenders out of prison because 'prisons are bad' isn't helping a whole lot either. A major dem platform is illegal immigration is just dandy. It appears democrat voters are complicit with lawlessness.

Support for various kinds of immigration reform is not support for illegal immigration or lawlessness. This is, of course, a really big topic and I'm not going to try to address it in detail here. We could discuss it elsewhere at some point if you were interested.
