Not surprising, given that economists - regardless of political stripe - agree that free trade is good for Americans.

Donald Trump’s solution is to ... levy a 45% tax on Chinese imports. The idea is to make Chinese goods more expensive so that American producers who pay their workers more can gain a competitive edge.

There’s a painful side effect to this plan, however: It would, well, make a lot of products more expensive, and most of the price hikes would come straight out of consumer wallets. ... A 45% tariff on Chinese imports would encourage other low-cost exporters, such as Vietnam, Bangladesh and Mexico, to ship more goods to America. Whether U.S. producers would gain an edge is debatable. ...

Trump’s tariff plan would likely meet firm public resistance. Economists would also protest. “Economists disagree about a lot,” says Ozimek, “but there’s very strong agreement that free trade benefits Americans, on average.” A poll of economists by the University of Chicago, for instance, found that 100% of them believe U.S. trade with China makes most Americans better off.

Most economists also agree that free trade—like anything that improves efficiency and market performance—produces winners and losers. And the losers usually include people who get the job done slower, at a higher cost than competitors. Protecting underperformers isn’t likely to help the U.S. economy. Helping them perform better would.

Donald Trump wants you to pay more for smartphones, TVs and a lot else

100% of economists in a University of Chicago poll is not likely equal to 100% of economists, as your header states.

In fact, even those polled who answered did not equal 100% of those polled.

Raising prices and giving the government more money. Sounds like a Democrat idea!!!

Is that right?

Hummmmmmmmmmmm

In that case I predict that he will win by a landslide.

Americans are as smart as door knobs

.

If a bunch of economists are against it...argues pretty strongly in favor of it.

When was the last time an economist was right about anything.

Do you honestly think any candidate cares about American workers? Not a chance. Business looks to pay less. Sad fact.

Utter bullshit OP. Do you know how many disagreements I have read against David Ricardo?
how do you think Japan got so badass?
How do you think America got so badass?
That is barely higher than what we charge American corporations any damn ways.

Lower the corporate tax rate to about 5 percent, tariffs on imports, forget amnesty, cut the bloated govt, shred those unfair trade deals, reform taxes and for gawd sakes quit punishing people for keeping their money here!!!!!!
And then BOOM
After we start eating gold for dinner, lower the imports to about 5% an lets free trade our asses off!!

Yep free trade has done WONDERS for Americans. I can point out at LEAST 25 plants/factories I either worked at or family members worked at OR people were working at as I was growing up that are now CLOSED either gone overseas or just closed down because of CHEAP CRAP from overseas. Trump is right 100%. PERIOD.

Can you please justify your communist-leaning tax increases on the American economy with a more coherent answer?

Thanks.

Who should we believe? The man that's spent 35-40 years CUTTING DEALS,STARTING BUSINESSES etc or people who TALK about doing these things? I know who I believe in and trust.

It was plenty coherent, you just didn't have a response aside from your communist comment. You do know Marx praised Ricardo, right? Lol
I just won't tell you why..

Not Trump, if you have any idea whatsoever of what has happened over the past 70 years.

The US government has cut hundreds of tariffs, i.e. taxes, over the past 70 years as trade grew faster than the economy. These were guided by empirical studies used by the economists in the government.

How many tariffs has Donald Trump negotiated? That's right, zero.

This might surprise those with little education, but negotiating to build a condominium in downtown New York is not the same as negotiating tariffs.

higher prices and a lack thereof of junk, is more important than our laborers, GDP etc. but it's ok. There will be plenty of jobs available for stacking Chinese junk on shelves and flipping fast food workers because no one can afford a grocery store. Lol makes sense.

Because you can't.

There are a lot of legitimate criticisms of economists, but the one single thing that has the most consensus amongst economists is free trade.

Find me a conservative economist that criticizes free trade.

Thanks.

So you DO support higher taxes and think capitalism produces junk.

You sound like Naomi Klein, who is left of the socialist, Bernie Sanders.

Did you know that you sound like a communist?

Yea, the tariffs that lead to fastest most massive economy build up in history. i think they should have been rid of earlier but what can you do?
I believe there is a time and place for various trade methods. I love free trade, but I also love America and Americans. I give to shits about making us less rich, so third world shit holes can be less poor.
