2019 WHO Review Found "NO EVIDENCE" that Masks Stop Spread of Flu

But I should also note, the article doesn't claim what the title is saying.
Good! Keep that up.

The study concludes that masks only offer people protection from COVID-19 "when circumstances compel them to be within 6 feet of others for sustained periods."

So masks can protect people. They didn't find NO evidence like claimed.
Wrong... They reduce the viral load in the air from the infected person. The mask actually protects no one fully.

Who said it protects people "fully"? The argument here was that the study found NO benefit.
You think 2% is a viable effect?

If you have that study you can post it. I do NOT know what exactly is the best answer. I do know that misrepresenting things is never the best one.

I like the chick who thinks the virus is a partisan Democrat whining about "misrepresenting things"

Well, well, come to find out that a 2019 WHO review of studies on wearing masks and other measures found "no evidence" that masks prevented the flu from spreading.

A study on masks and COVID-19 recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine states that "wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection." The study concludes that masks only offer people protection from COVID-19 "when circumstances compel them to be within 6 feet of others for sustained periods."

So why are so many governors still requiring people to wear masks inside stores, churches, businesses, etc.? If your line of work requires you to be within 6 feet of others for "sustained periods," then, yes, wearing a mask is wise; otherwise, there is no need to wear a mask.
There is more known about the virus now. People around the world are wearing mazks, except for Trump. Look what happened to him.

What is known about covid-19 is that since 90% of those infected are turning out to be asymptomatic, then we actually were very close to herd immunity all along.
In which case then we could have sacrificed about 50,000 people in March, and totally eliminated the virus completely then. That would have saved all those who died after March from covid-19.
So then the whole "flattening the curve", and "social distancing" strategy with masks, was a bad idea that should never have been done.

That's demonstrated in Europe where the countries that locked down the quickest and hardest are the ones that are having the strongest flareups now, like Spain and France

Ass backwards? Out side no need for mask if keeping some distance from unknown person. Inside mask cuts down the chance of getting infected 30- to 80% (Depending on who you believe ) add 6 feet of social distancing & your chances go up maybe to 100%.
Think about this, in normal times if some one is infected with ANYTHING we tend to social distance from them, unless we don't care if we get it. Don't we care about getting or giving this virus that kills?

If they make no difference why do doctors wear them?

First, health care professionals wear medical grade masks, not daisy print cloth masks or bandannas. Second, surgeons, in particular, wear masks to protect themselves from bodily fluids shooting out when operating and performing other procedures.

I'm 50/50 on the efficacy of mask wearing. There is some evidence to suggest it may help and I've read evidence, from doctors, who've said they do little good and might actually be worse because the general public doesn't wear and treat them correctly.

They also wear them to protect the patient. You would wear a face guard to protect yourself from fluids.

And I won't counter your argument as I do not know exactly what is the right answer outside of knowing that misrepresenting something is never the right answer.

Agreed. The masks are an important item along with socially distancing, crowd avoidance. We will not get this virus under control until all of us follow this guidance by the medical profession. So do it! This is not a difficult ask by the medical profession.

So, the article specifically says that mask are useful when you are in close proximity for more than a specified period of time. That agrees with the CDC which says that if you are going to be in close proximity for more than 15 minutes, a mask should be worn.

Doctors, if one were to apply critical thinking that we are taught at an early age, are in close proximity all day. Note that they are not required to wear them when not attending patients. In addition, nurses and doctors are around people with open wounds, both surgical and trauma-induced. The masks THEN act as a barrier to 'Germs" which are orders of magnitude larger than any virus A mask, to a virus, is like throwing a grain of sand at a cyclone fence.

$10 says every single doctor dealing with a covid patient has a mask on at all time.

Add that the doctor has that mask on because it is mandated by administration out of fear of the state and you'd be close to accurate.

You might want to actually read the study more closely, Mike. There is no evidence that masks prevent the spread of flu only because no concerted medical study of the issue has ever been done! But based on mechanistic plausibility, masks are STILL RECOMMENDED in the case of severe influenza outbreaks. In other words, they can't hurt.

But does that justify the fear and mistreatment of people NOT wearing masks? No. In the case of an asymptomatic but infected person not wearing a mask, wearing a mask probably does little in protecting you from GETTING infected and if you are not coughing, wheezing, etc., likely does little in making much of a difference in your SPREADING your infection either unless you are in close proximity with others for extended periods in a non-ventilated space.

Bottom line: wearing masks are a POTENTIAL benefit in most situations, but there is no hard science backing the radical vilification of otherwise healthy people not wearing them under reasonable circumstances.

Just ask trump and Herman Cain.
How poetic trump made fun of Biden for wearing a mask now trump got it because he was standing too close to hope hix while not wearing a mask.

You Republicans will never admit you were wrong. You still defend your position? Dog in. Use a marker to draw where the tornado went

And covering your mouth when you cough is pointless

I hear doctors no longer wear masks when they operate on people. Why bother right? They don’t work right? Lol. Republicans are so stupid they’ll believe anything

LOL

Surgical masks are more protective than wrapping a sweaty mask around your face to OBEY.

People like you are now COOL WITH WATERBOARDING.........because you enjoy being miserable and want everyone to be miserable with you.

Those are medical grade masks, dim wit. They are also in sterile environments and they wash thoroughly and don't touch their face. If you are around sick people all day and wear a medical grade mask that is very different. To compare that to street masks at a Wegman's grocery store is completely moronic

Senator Thom Tillis contracted C-19 while wearing a mask.

“Thom Tillis wore a mask at the event in the Rose Garden- he has tested positive,” journalist Heather Childers reported on Saturday. A photo also shows Tillis wearing a mask at the event. Despite that, he has since contracted the virus:
