One need not support every stupid policy or verbal over-reaction of Democrats to see that Trump and his cultists — and much of his Republican Party base — have been the driving force and have the main responsibility for extreme demagoguery and fanaticism in partisan party politics today.

I am talking about language extremism in partisan politics, not policy problems, or differences on “cultural issues.”

The open “demonization” of Democrats has roots in Christian fundamentalism, but you don’t have to be religious, just an irresponsible troll, to partake. Trump utilized grievances that already existed and created a divisive personality cult. But beyond his personal supporters, many just cranky or deeply aggrieved white people have been “liberated” and emboldened by the internet to express irresponsible sentiments and use outrageous language. The rural dislike for city life, fear of minorities, and political and economic ignorance have played their part too.

So now we have millions happy to attack non-MAGA or even non-Trump supporting Americans (even those who sympathize with many MAGA policies) as “traitors.” As for those who more broadly criticize the rightwing populism of “Trumpism,” they are all “RINOs” or “Globalists” or “shills of XiJinping.” The MAGA movement more and more characterizes non-Republicans as “Demonrats,” “socialists” and “fascists” — and adopts far-out conspiracy theories against corporate capitalists (if they are “Liberals” anyway).

Of course in the verbal escalation, Democrats and fearful Liberals often mimic MAGA in certain ways. But this is a losing game for Liberals and working people generally.

Turning every complex problem into a partisan football, within limits, is great for corporate capitalists and the super rich. The deadlock in our “Two Party system” allows them to extend the hold of big money over society and government, and follow Wall Street’s real imperial interests abroad unimpeded.
