The government stands to get a windfall of $Billions in new tax revenue, and money saved from legal expenses, in addition to saving $Millions for the keep of prisoners. With the new laws that make pot legal in some states, states are raking in $Millions in new tax revenue. And, with less arrest for possession of pot, the courts aren't seeing the volume of cases they normally would. This saves the states $Millions in legal fees and court cost. In addition, less convictions for possession, the jails and prisons are saving $Millions. This is a "win-win" situation for everyone. The extra revenue and savings could be used for much needed programs and infrastructure projects, again a "win-win" for everyone.
My question is, why did it take so long for state governments to see the benefits of legal pot? How long will it be before pot is legal in every state? And, with pot legal and people allowed to grow their own weed, it's sure to hurt the drug lords and drug dealers, putting a huge dent in their bank accounts. It may even help to reduce crime in some neighborhoods that are known for drug dealing. Seems like everyone could benefit from legal pot. To me, the positives far out-weigh the negatives.
