When it came time to deliver punishment to Tina Cuffie and Floyd Wimes for slowly starving and beating their 6-year-old son to death, a judge Tuesday first offered a warning to the South Philadelphia parents.
"This is not a day for mercy," Common Pleas Court Judge Barbara McDermott said before sentencing the pair to 30 to 60 years for the death of Khalil Wimes - who prosecutors said suffered three years of abuse and neglect after the city plucked him from his caring foster home in 2009 and returned him to his parents.
Khalil was already dead, and his scarred and battered body weighed only 29 pounds, when Cuffie and Wimes finally brought him to the hospital one night in March 2012. The final blow, prosecutors said, was a punch to his head delivered hours earlier by Cuffie as the boy dried off from a morning bath.
At a September trial, McDermott found the pair guilty of third-degree murder after testimony showed Khalil endured months of regular beatings with belts and cords, had food regularly withheld as punishment, and was forced to sleep on a soiled mattress on the floor of a latched bedroom to ensure that he wouldn't sneak out for food.
