An Interstate 5 bridge collapsed into the Skagit River on Thursday evening, dumping cars and people into the waters north of Mount Vernon.

Washington State Patrol spokesman Mark Francis wrote on Twitter at 7:19 p.m. that both the northbound and southbound lanes had collapsed in the water.

Francis told the Associated Press he did not know how many people were in the water, whether there were any injuries or what caused the collapse.

Rescue efforts were under way soon after as dozens of people gathered on the shore to watch. A reporter on the scene said he saw a rescue boat take at least one person to shore amid cheers from the spectators.

Photographs of the collapse circulating on Twitter and Facebook showed a wide gap in the bridge and at least two vehicles in the water.

The bridge, built in 1955, was classified by the National Bridge Inventory as “functionally obsolete” in both 2000 and 2010. But the Washington Department of Transportation does not list it among its list of “structurally deficient bridges.”

Traffic around the site was backed up for miles.
U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen released a statement saying in part that he encourages “people to follow police instructions and stay away from the site of the collapse to let first responders address the situation safely.”

The Welfare culture strikes again!

Instead of paying people not to work, people could of been paid to rebuild this bridge.

Hey...guess who thought of that back in the 30's? Roosevelt...the FOUNDER of welfare in the US. Back then we had the WPA and the CCC who worked on projects such as bridge building, road building, the Hoover Dam, the Blue Ridge Parkway and a shit ton of other projects. I don't know who stopped those programs, but it was wrong.

wow, not only did you get to be a SLAVE for the state you got to PAY YOURSELF too..

because we all know WHERE the guberment gets it's MONEY FROM..

But you libs like making slaves of people

The bridge was old and should have been fixed already- before the sequester, which merely reduces future spending by a trivial amount.

Is everything that goes wrong going to get blamed on cuts? Obama has had five years to address stuff like this, but has been too busy worrying about other issues, like abortion, birth control and granting amnesty to millions of illegals.

There haven't been any deep cuts. Obama supporters keep trying to claim that he spent less than anyone, so maybe you should direct your complaints to White House website if you really believe his spending less was the cause of this.

The state of Washington received $1.5 billion transportation stimulus in 2009. Where did that money go?

SEATTLE (AP) - When assigning federal stimulus money for highways, Washington state transportation officials say they looked for ready-to-go projects that would meet the government's goal of getting people quickly to work.

And for the most part, they say, that excluded bridges.

An Associated Press analysis found many states are spending stimulus dollars on bridges already in good shape or on easier projects like repaving roads.

President Barack Obama urged Congress to pass his $787 billion stimulus package in part so some of the money could be used to rebuild what he called America's "crumbling bridges."

Inspection records show that more than a quarter of Washington state's 7,763 bridges are rated as either structurally deficient, meaning they need repair or replacement of a component, or functionally obsolete, meaning they need updates to handle capacity or such things as wider lanes and higher clearances.

AP's analysis found four obsolete bridges in the state among 29 bridge projects receiving stimulus money.

Washington state is fortunate because it has a good bridge replacement program, thanks to a $15 billion capital improvement plan, says state Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond.

Does anyone need any further reasons why this happened?

It went to shitty roads.

You're blaming people who had nothing to do with Washington State, paragon of Left Coast liberalism. Tax cuts had nothing to do with that bridge's failure.

Your quotation said, "The bridge, built in 1955, was classified by the National Bridge Inventory as 'functionally obsolete' in both 2000 and 2010. But the Washington Department of Transportation does not list it among its list of 'structurally deficient bridges'."

What did the Highway Department of the Great State of Washington not understand about the words "functionally obsolete?"

Stop blaming conservatives for the reading comprehension failure of liberals who had an obligation to shut down dangerous bridges when the information was available to them.

If states would shut down "structurally obsolete" bridges, the inconvenience would then come to the attention of the public that responsible politicians who care for them would never allow danger on the streets on their watch.

Perhaps more structurally obsolete bridges need to be closed until funds become available for their repair?

Who's looking after the people?

Stop blaming conservatives for the reading comprehension failure of liberals who had an obligation to shut down dangerous bridges when the information was available to them.

Well their elected Masters from their party is blaming the republicans, so they must SPREAD that too..and WAIL, GIVE US MO of your hard earned MONEY...that 800 BILLION Obama TOOK from you just WASN'T ENOUGH

It wasn't spent on infrastructure. You want to know where it was spent? On bail-outs, bs shit and free shit.

Boehner should put forward a stand alone infrastructure bill that looks kind of like this.
-500 billion dollars added on top of the 260 billion already being spent.
*300 billion for infrastructure like roads, bridges, tunnels
*100 billion for energy infrastructure; wires, modernizing, etc.
*100 billion for up keep and innovation.

Darn those tax-cutting liberals in Washington state.

I think we need to interview "Mothman" regarding the bridge collapse. if anyone has any accurate insight on the cause of this minor bridge collapse, who else but Mothman would know the answer.

Oh, I'm sorry....I'll put you down as one of the "give them money for doing nothing" crowd...I don't want to hear shit from you about a welfare state, or a "hand up instead of a hand out".

Thanks....welcome to the left.

Ed Schultz is still trying to come up with an excuse/scenario that Bush was involved with the collapse.

MSNBC Ed Schultz spent 15 minutes blasting Republicans for the Skagit bridge collapse. He said infrastructure spending went down when Bush took office & showed the same chart that I posted. These idiots believe they can just stand there & lie to our face like Obama & Holder did on Benghazi, IRS & AP phone records. Democrats need to put people to work rebuilding this country & stop paying people to sit on their ass.

They would if Republicans in Congress would stop wasting taxpayer money and their time coming up with so many bogus scandals.

We can barrow at the lowest rates in 70 years but we are to fucking stupid to barrow & spend building the country & putting people to work. Waiting for infrastructure failure & rebuilding it after interest rates climb & unemployment falls is economic suicide. Failure to build infrastructure during a recession will destroy this country.
